An athletic woman recently angered her overweight sister-in-law after she hit back at the larger woman’s jealous insistence that she was lucky. In fact, she worked hard to stay healthy. Here’s what the belittled woman had to say:
She Gained Weight
In her late 20s, the woman came to the realization that she could no longer indulge in unrestricted eating without facing the consequences.
Rapid weight gain ensued, which didn’t align well with her active lifestyle. It wasn’t solely about appearance for her; she simply felt uncomfortable with the extra weight she was carrying.
She Made a Change
The woman explained, “I like to hike and be outdoorsy, and I was struggling to do those things. I made adjustments to my diet—I began to eat very clean at home so that I could just eat whatever I wanted when I went out and not have to obsess.”
Her Husband Joined Her
When the woman discussed her goals with her boyfriend, who eventually became her husband, they mutually agreed to prioritize their long-term health by adopting healthier eating habits together.
In addition, the woman incorporated a daily running routine, engaged in weekly strength training sessions, and dedicated time to the gym. They also cherished their shared experiences of going on hikes together.
Her Sister-In-Law Was Jealous
As a result of these lifestyle changes, the husband and his wife maintained athletic figures despite indulging whenever they went out at the weekend.
However, the woman faced constant criticism from her sister-in-law, who often made comments about their “privileged skinny genes” and joked that they “eat like cows.”
She Didn’t Believe Her
Although the athletic woman tried to explain that the indulgence her sister-in-law witnessed during their weekly outings didn’t reflect their usual diet, her sister-in-law didn’t seem convinced.
The sister-in-law, who was overweight and did not engage in regular exercise, remained unaware of the nutritious meals prepared by the health-conscious couple at home. This lack of awareness was due to the fact that she primarily witnessed them indulging in less
She Had Enough
On the woman’s birthday, she felt that her sister-in-law crossed a line by sarcastically referring to her as “God’s favorite” and a “skinny mean girl.”
Fed up with these comments, the woman defended herself, explaining that her healthy body shape was a direct result of her disciplined lifestyle.
The Sister-In-Law Made Excuses
The sister-in-law countered, whining that she wasn’t fortunate enough to love exercise as the woman did, and she was ‘privileged’ that she enjoyed it.
The frustrated woman said, “I snapped at her after that because I actually hate running 50% of the time, but I do it anyway because exercise is good for everyone, and most people don’t have any good excuse not to.”
She Sent a Long Message
After the argument, the sister sent the woman a long message accusing her of being fatphobic and asserting that she had no right to comment on her lifestyle.
The woman responded that she was tired of her sister’s jealousy-driven comments and that the larger woman had been the one commenting on her own lifestyle. She asked her sister to stop talking to her altogether, refrain from commenting, and focus on herself.
The Family Was Divided
Half of her family sided with her, while the other half believed she should have been more sensitive. The woman, however, maintained her stance.
She reiterated that she and her husband had changed their diet and workout routines for their own sake and did not preach to others. However, they were both tired of being enviously criticized for ‘luck’ when they worked so hard to stay in shape.
Was She Fatphobic?
Because some of the family still sided with her sister-in-law, the woman was left wondering whether she was wrong to speak the truth so plainly, or if she should have been more sensitive to the other woman’s weight struggles.
Unsure, she turned to the Reddit forum to seek answers. Were her words reasonable, given the amount of unfairly jealous commentary she had received?
People Responded
One person commented, “She is bullying you and making repeated unwelcome comments about your body and health. The family should have zero tolerance for that kind of thing.”
Another person agreed, “As a fat person myself, what you said is far from fatphobic, and she should honestly be ashamed of her jealousy towards you and your husband. You had every right to stand up for yourself.”
