A man recently taught his mother-in-law a very valuable lesson that she won’t forget any time soon.
Here’s what happened.
The man had gotten a new job. It was a great job with a fantastic salary. So he decided to spoil everyone with extravagant gifts for Christmas. He had been very impressed with his nine-year-old daughter, so he specifically decided to spend a lot of money on her.
“She has been pushing herself in school, helping around the house voluntarily, and has shown so much kindness. She deserves a lot,” he said.
Apparently, his mother-in-law had a different opinion.
When she arrived at his house in the morning, she noticed more gifts under the Christmas tree than usual. She was curious and asked him why there were so many gifts.
The man told her he had bought everyone a bunch of gifts, including her. She asked how many gifts he got his daughter, and he said, “I got her about three big gifts and three mini gifts.”
His mother-in-law got surprisingly upset and told him that a nine-year-old did not deserve to get so many gifts.
She decided not to give his daughter the doll she had bought her so she wouldn’t be too spoiled.
The man told her it wasn’t fair, since she had promised her a doll for Christmas, and she was looking forward to the gift.
His mother-in-law maintained her stance and said this would teach his daughter that she can’t always get everything she wants.
The man understood her point of view but still felt her decision was unfair. “Look, I understand that, but it’s not like I shower my daughter with gifts every day. Christmas is a day you are supposed to spoil your kids,” he said.
He spoke to his wife about the situation, and she told him to let it go. She felt her mother had the right to do anything she wanted with the gift since it belonged to her.
The man wasn’t having it and decided to teach his mother-in-law a lesson by depriving her of something she really wanted.
“I decided to remove the $600 designer bag I got her for Christmas, the thing I knew she wanted the most, and I gave her a $40 robe instead,” he said.
She was disappointed when she opened her present because she noticed everyone else got increasingly expensive gifts from him. She asked him if that was all he got for her.
“I said yes and apologized for disappointing her. I also told her we can’t always get the gifts we hope for,” he said.
His mother-in-law and his wife were furious at his petty attitude. The man was unbothered. He felt she deserved it.
Nonetheless, the man reached out to Reddit and asked the commenters for their opinion.
