A woman who lives in her parents’ house was recently told to move out after they found forbidden items in her room. The daughter was upset and felt they had crossed a boundary. Here’s what the 25-year-old had to say.
The Woman Needed To Save Money
“A few months ago, I moved back in with my parents to save money for a house. This was more their idea than mine, so I agreed and was thankful they were willing to help me out.”
She Was A Good Daughter
The daughter had a good relationship with her family and, as the eldest child, tried to take on additional roles and responsibilities to be a good daughter and older sister.
The woman had grown up in a very religious environment, with strict rules against drinking, premarital sex, tea, coffee, tattoos, swearing, and more.
The Woman Isn’t Religious Anymore
She explained, “I have since distanced myself from, what I feel, was a very toxic religion. I am doing really well; my mental health is better than ever, I have a full-time job that I love, and I am really happy!”
Her Mother Found Marijuana
One day, her mother discovered some weed stashed in a purse while putting something away in her room. The woman smoked marijuana occasionally, perhaps once a month.
Her parents confronted her, saying she had broken their rules and had 30 days to find a new place to live. She thought the rule was not to drink or smoke near the house or around her parents, but apparently, she was not allowed to have it in the house at all.
The Parents Were Needlessly Worried
“I was apologetic, understanding, and respectful. They ended up being more upset that I wouldn’t admit I was going down a dangerous path or that I didn’t see a problem with my actions,” the daughter said.
The Father Wanted Her To Buy A House
Although she had been searching for a new place, her father wanted her to buy a house instead of renting. He said he would be flexible with the timeframe as long as she was actively looking for a house and working on getting a loan.
The Woman Kept The Drugs
Recently, her parents found out she hadn’t thrown away the weed and had smoked it occasionally, which made them very angry. Again, they were mostly upset that she wouldn’t admit to having a problem rather than the infrequent act itself.
The Daughter Wanted To Move Out Quickly
The woman has been touring rental properties so that she can move out quickly and avoid further straining her relationship with her parents. She hadn’t drunk or smoked since the last time they were upset with her.
They Searched Her Room
“I have not drunk or smoked since they last got upset with me either, but today I came home and found that they had gone through my room and found condoms and a few very personal ‘toys,'” the woman recounted.
She Was Furious
Although she acknowledged that she had breached her parents’ trust and was aware it was their house, she believed she had a valid reason to feel upset about the absence of privacy and the total lack of boundaries. Seeking validation for her emotions, she turned to the online community, seeking their perspective on the matter.

Another user agreed, “NTA—going through your belongings is totally uncalled for. You’re not a 15-year-old. You’re a grown woman and have a right to privacy, even in their house. Your parents are also being manipulative about buying a home. You should only buy a home if you feel ready, not because your parents think poorly of you if you don’t.”
