An Army Clerk Got Revenge on His CO by Posting his Personnel Files Across the World and Ruining His Career

A man recently told Reddit about the time his dad got revenge on his horrible commanding officer in the army by messing with his career and ruining his chances for promotion. Here’s what he had to say:

His dad was a soldier

Several years back, the man’s father served as a soldier stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Regrettably, he had a severe allergic reaction to a particular shrub found in central Texas.

Due to his allergy, his dad was restricted to office work and prohibited by Army doctors from outdoor duties. The problem was that his commanding officer was a West Point graduate who detested soldiers who didn’t want to train 24/7. “He thought my dad was milking his allergies in order to avoid being a real soldier,” the man said.

Strangely enough, the captain harbored a strong disdain for the father’s wife (the man’s mother) being heavily pregnant. The commanding officer consistently seized every chance to degrade and shame the man’s father, questioning his masculinity, doubting his dedication to upholding the Constitution, and disparaging his approach to his duties.

He did everything to upset him. He would call him out in front of the company or debase him in front of higher-level HQ staff. He’d call his house at 6 a.m. on Sunday and order his dad in for pointless reasons. In short, he made his dad’s life a living hell.

Before he was due to leave active duty, his dad discovered that the CO had received orders to go on an assignment that would help him get promotions or other good jobs. As a clerk, the man’s dad had full access to unit personnel files, orders, etc. He also had keys to the building.

This was during the pre-digital, pre-computer era. The night before his dad was due to leave, he took all of the captain’s personnel folders and mailed them separately and anonymously to various posts around the globe, knowing full well it would take weeks to deliver them to geographically unrelated unit mailrooms around the world that may or may not open the packages and return them.

The unit was in the field for a 2-week exercise on the day his dad left, which meant a skeleton crew would operate the phones and mow lawns until they returned from the field. No one was the wiser for weeks.

The CO was furious

One of his dad’s old poker-playing sergeant buddies wrote a few months later, telling him that the captain had gone ballistic. The missing files seriously damaged the captain’s career since some of the files were lost in the system. The coveted assignment orders were canceled, and the entire personnel record had to be reconstructed manually by the army.

The man’s dad told him, “It was a teaching moment for the cruel CO that you should never mess with your unit clerk because even chairborne rangers know how to seriously wound enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Did he do the right thing?
