A woman has asked whether she was in the wrong for allowing her husband’s family to stay with them rather than her terminally ill sister-in-law. Here’s what she had to say.
They Got Married and Moved Away
The woman and her husband got married over a year ago. For work reasons, the two moved to a different state after their wedding.
His Family Never Visited
During that time, nobody on the husband’s side of the family had made any attempt to come and visit them.
Meanwhile, the woman and her husband have taken numerous trips to visit their family, and likewise, her family has made several visits to the couple’s home.
She Was Annoyed
The fact that her husband’s family hadn’t bothered to visit really upset the woman.
“We even offered to pay for them to come to see us as well as a hotel (our apartment is too small for guests),” she said.
They Always Make Excuses
Each and every time the man’s family has been asked to visit, they have made an excuse as to why they cannot come.
The woman said that it has always been this way, even when they lived as close as two hours away from them.
They Stopped Asking Them to Visit
And it simply got to a point where the woman’s husband gave up on asking his family to visit.
However, recently, the man’s parents got in touch and said they wanted to come to visit during the Easter holidays.
This wasn’t a big deal, but then suddenly the husband’s sister, who had never visited either, phoned.
It Angered His Sister
Demanding an explanation, she confronted the woman and her husband, seeking confirmation if they were the ones responsible for inviting her parents to visit. Perplexed, the man responded that they were not responsible for extending the invitation.
In an outburst of anger, his sister expressed her outrage that they had allowed her parents to visit while the husband’s other sister was battling terminal cancer. She highlighted that she lived several states away from the rest of the family.
The Husband’s Other Sister Was Sick
“My sister-in-law was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer eight months ago, and the doctors say they don’t expect her to last the year,” the woman said.
The husband’s sister was angry about the woman and her husband letting his parents stay rather than ensuring they went and visited his ill sister.
The Parents Have Visited the Sister Many Times
Since her diagnosis, however, the man’s parents have visited the ill sister several times, which makes sense considering her health.
The woman stepped in and joined the conversation. She told her angry sister-in-law that her husband’s parents are grown adults who are more than capable of making their own decisions.
The Family Is Now Torn
However, since the call, a lot of family drama has arisen, despite the woman assuring her sister-in-law that a two-day visit from her husband’s family won’t make much of a difference.
But the woman is unsure of whether she should have said no and told her husband’s parents to visit the ill sister-in-law instead.
So She Asked For Advice
One person said, “The sister-in-law is scared. The parents want to make up for lost time with their son, but I think she’s upset her parents are giving up valuable time with their dying child. Please do not judge the sister-in-law.”
Another noted, “Your parents-in-law asked to come to see you; you’re not twisting their arm and making them choose you over your sister-in-law.”
