A man recently asked the internet if he was wrong for turning off his phone so that his wife couldn’t contact him during a ‘non-tech’ weekend with his best friend.
They do this every year
The man has a best friend, and they have an annual tradition where they take a ‘tech-free’ weekend trip together. They have been doing this for the past ten years, and the two buddies pick a city and go exploring.
It’s a tech free trip
They want to savor the experience, so they agreed not to turn on their phones from the get-go. This particular trip was a bit different because the man was now married. He had been on the trip when dating his wife, and she’d never bothered him about it.
His wife wants his phone on
But this time was different. His wife demanded he take his phone and let her know when he arrived. Like a dutiful husband, he texted her to tell her he had arrived safely.
She kept texting
However, his wife started texting him back, asking how things were going. When he didn’t respond, she texted him again. “I eventually muted our text conversation because I was sick of the phone buzzing,” the man said.
She started calling
Muting his phone, however, didn’t stop his wife because a few hours later, she phoned him to ask why he wasn’t responding to her texts. He explained that the trip was supposed to be a no-phone weekend, so he kept the call short despite her trying to drag out the conversation.
He turned it off
She called him again after this, and when he answered and found out it wasn’t an emergency, he decided the best course of action was to turn off his phone altogether. She then started calling his friend’s phone, and he turned off his phone as well.
It was off the whole weekend
So the two friends spent the rest of the weekend with their phones turned off until they drove back the following Monday. On his way back, the man called his wife to let her know he was headed home, but she was furious.
His wife was furious
Her sister had a car accident and broke a few bones. She was going to be okay, but his wife was very upset and angry that her husband had ignored her the entire weekend when she needed him.
He said it was her fault
“I told her that I was very sorry to hear about her sister, but it wasn’t my fault she had essentially forced my hand into cutting off means of communication,” the man said.
Was he wrong for turning off his phone?
But he wasn’t sure if perhaps his wife may have a point, so he reached out to the Reddit community to see if he was wrong for turning off his phone during his tech-free weekend trip with his friend.
People responded
One user said, “I have the odd feeling that she almost wanted there to be an actual emergency so she could feel justified in bothering, and might have created one if it didn’t occur naturally. She desperately doesn’t want you away from her. You’ll need to have a serious conversation about that.”
Another said, “I had a similar thought that she was sabotaging the tech-free weekend. If a friend can’t relax because he’s fielding texts, then OP can’t relax either, and it’s a win for her. She sounds awfully insecure and exhausting.”
