He Refuses to Pay for His Parent’s Trip Because They Never Took Him Anywhere as A Child and Now They’re Calling Him Spiteful

A grown son recently got name-called after refusing to pay for his parents to travel to DC with him after he was never allowed to join their trips as a teenager. Here’s what the 30-year-old man had to say.

His Family Went To Washington

The man grew up in a family of four in NYC. When he was 15, his sister, who has a disability, was invited to be part of a medical study in Washington DC.

He explained, “The first time, I couldn’t go because my parents couldn’t afford to buy me a ticket on top of what the study was funding.”

They later discovered the study would have paid for his ticket anyway

The second time his sister had to go on a trip, the man assumed he would be joining them. He was filled with excitement, especially since the trip was scheduled around his 16th birthday. He had a keen interest in politics so he really wanted to go on the trip to Washington.

Regrettably, his expectations were shattered, and he experienced deep disappointment.

School Was Starting

His parents didn’t allow him to go on this trip either because it coincided with his first day of school in September. “I was completely devastated because not only were my DC dreams crushed, but I was also going to be alone for my 16th birthday,” the son said.

When the man’s parents and sister went on a third trip, he missed that one too.

“I don’t even remember why I couldn’t go on the third trip. It probably had something to do with school as well. They had a lot of time to sightsee and have fun, and it was a bummer to miss out on that with my family,” he recounted.

He Has An Interview

Now, at thirty, the man will finally see DC for the first time. He is interviewing for his dream job, which is half remote and half on-site, so he’d be able to split his time between DC and NYC.

He is flying ahead of the interview date to give himself some time to relax before the high-stakes interview. He is funding the extra days with a recent inheritance.

When his parents found out about this trip, they asked if he could use some of that inheritance to fly them out so they could finally make a family trip together.

They said they could show him some of the places they know and their favorite parts of DC from their previous trips.

He’s Still Hurt

The son admits he has enough money to cover a family trip, but he’d rather just do his own thing.

“I also want the time that weekend to relax and not have to go on a tour of all the places my family went to without me. I understand it’s petty and that it’s been a long time since all of that, but it still hurts,'” he said.

Is He Being Vengeful?

The trouble is, now his parents think he’s acting in revenge for the past trips that he missed.

Their son insists this isn’t true, and he just wants peace before a stressful interview.

He said, “I feel fine about my decision, but my family called me a spiteful jerk. So I’m asking the Reddit community what they think.”

People Responded

One user said, “They will survive. They’ve been there three times. You’ve never been there. Enjoy your trip.”

Another posted, “Your parents are acting super entitled. You do not have to pay for a vacation for them just because you can afford it. They are being mean and manipulative.”
