A man recently revealed that he was incredibly strict with a couple whose house was being foreclosed after they threatened to put a bomb in his car. Here’s what the man had to say.
He Checked The Houses
Many years ago, the man worked for banks that foreclosed on houses. He wasn’t a lawyer, nor did he work for the bank. All the man did was keep track of the houses.
He explained, “I just kept track of houses and made sure they were clean, secure, had no title or boundary issues, no hazmat, no septic leaks, mold, and whatnot.”
He Took Possession of The Houses
One of the responsibilities in the man’s job was to take possession of houses from their previous owners, ensuring that they had not been stripped of valuable belongings. He would also oversee the transfer of utilities such as gas, power, and water to the bank’s name. In some cases, he would provide a check to the former owners.
He Gave Pay-off Cheques
The man said, “There were a couple of programs I handled. One was a deed in place of foreclosure in which the banks, through their lawyers, would give the people who couldn’t afford their primary mortgage a check if they simply walked away and didn’t go through the formality of foreclosure.”
Property Inspections
Although the man didn’t handle the legal aspects, he played a crucial role in inspecting the houses to ensure they hadn’t been burned down or abandoned. He conducted thorough inspections to check for any signs of stripping or vandalism, ensuring the property was in proper condition. Once satisfied, he would provide the former owners with the agreed-upon check.
Houses Were Sometimes Mistreated
The man would drive by the house once a week while still waiting for the handoff, making sure that the house was still there and not abandoned or rented out, which was a common trick. This would also allow him to ensure the house was not used as a dumping ground for anything. The man was never involved with the people inside; his job was concerned only with the house itself.
He Always Informed The Occupiers
Throughout the process, the man would introduce himself, explain why he was taking any photos each week, and what they could expect.
He would then let them know that when he eventually showed up with a cheque, he was not pulling a scam. Doing it this way meant it tended to make the entire process run far more smoothly.
It stopped any homeowners from calling 911 to complain about what would have seemed to be “some guy” taking pictures outside of their homes.
There Was One Very Nice House
One such house was a four-bedroom, three-bathroom with a three-car garage and was around 3,500 square feet in a good part of town.
The owner had skipped around $20,000 of mortgage, payments, taxes, water bills, and insurance by the time the man got involved.
The bank offered the homeowners a check worth $15,000 to walk away without having to go through foreclosure and eviction. This was on the condition that they left the house spotless.
The Indebted Couple Came To See Him
“One day, they came by my office to argue about the situation. I had nothing to do with the actual process, but I was a convenient face,” he said.
“So this mid-40s couple with designer handbags pulled up in their Range Rover and proceeded to waste 20 minutes of my time telling me it was unfair and they deserved more money.”
The Woman Threatened His Life
The man continued, “They didn’t like being told to take it up with the bank and the attorney. I also said, if they didn’t want to go through with it, then I had even less involvement.”
The man was used to a little abuse in his job, and so was willing to let this go. However, what annoyed him was that the woman threatened him by telling him he should start looking under his car before he started it.
He Inspected Their Property
Some weeks later, the man was sent to do an inspection. He was normally very lenient but was not so understanding this time because of the threat.
There Was Damage
A toilet paper holder had been ripped off the wall in one of the bathrooms. This was technically intentional damage and a stolen fixture. Normally he would consider it too minor to mention, but instead, he took photos and left with the check.
He Left Them To Sweat
He already knew that the bank would release the money as far greater damages had slid by in the past. What it did mean, however, was that the couple would not get the $15,000 they were expecting.
He Re-inspected
Three days later, the man was sent back to re-inspect. The holes he had found were now covered by cheap drywall. After seeing this, he knew the couple were just desperate to get whatever money they were offered.
He Decided to Give Them the Money
So he handed over the check, took the keys, and escorted the couple to the front door.
The man shared his petty revenge story on the Reddit forum in the hope others would appreciate it.
