A woman moved her son into a rental apartment after discovering her husband was secretly canceling all his job applications so he could stay home and care for his disabled brother.
Now the couple is at war, and she’s turned to Reddit to ask who is in the right here.
The couple has two sons, Aiden (23) and his younger brother (16), who is disabled.
Aiden recently moved back home after graduating college. The plan was for Aiden to live rent-free but stay home and help care for his disabled younger brother.
But, like any 23-year-old, Aiden wanted some freedom and independence. He told his parents he wanted a job to earn some extra cash for himself.
“My husband was against this and even offered to double Aiden’s allowance,” said the woman.
But Aiden was fed up with staying home and started applying for jobs.
Aiden applied for dozens, then hundreds of jobs. But nobody ever got back to him; he didn’t get one single callback or interview. Weird.
Aiden’s mom was confused. She couldn’t understand what was going on.
But now she does. And it’s all because of Dad’s sneaky and devious behavior.
“I found out that my husband was behind all the job applications being canceled,” the woman said. “He’d wait for Aiden to apply, then he proceeds to cancel the applications by impersonating him and using his email.”
The woman was shocked. Then she got angry. She confronted her husband, saying what he had done was completely unacceptable.
But dad didn’t back down. Instead, he tried to convince his wife that his underhand tactics to ruin Aiden’s job prospects were the “right” thing to do for the family.
“His justification is that he’s just trying to make sure that our younger son is cared for by Aiden, and said that Aiden has been a big help and him getting a job will affect his care for his brother,” said the angry woman.
The woman couldn’t let this kind of stuff happen in her house. So she decided to put an end to it.
She told Aiden what had happened (he was devastated), then rented him an apartment. She’s even paying for it until Aiden finds a job and can support himself.
Now it was dad’s turn to be angry. And in the argument that followed, things got very personal.
“My husband was livid when he found out. He said it was a huge decision for me to rent an apartment without even running it by him,” said the woman. “He called me unhinged and said I was separating the boys and teaching Aiden to become selfish and care more about a job than family.”
And that’s not all.
“He’s calling me a terrible mother,” complained the woman.
That hurt badly. Still, she thinks getting Aiden his own apartment was the right call.
She posted the story on Reddit and asked if she was the jerk of this story.
The post received more than 6K comments, and the verdict is clear. She’s not the jerk; her husband is.
“Your husband is manipulative, self-centered, and controlling,” one person said. “Good thing you got Aiden out of there. At least he has one good parent. You did the right thing. Be proud!”
“He’s refusing his son an independent life and expects him to put his whole life on hold for his brother. Your husband is in the wrong here. He puts his well-being over that of his own son. You are not the jerk.”
