A Woman Made Her Sister-in-Law Cry by Refusing To Give Her a Dress for Her Wedding Day, and Now the Family Is Divided

A woman’s sister-in-law recently demanded that she borrow a dress for her big day. But when the woman said no, the sister-in-law broke down. The family was torn over the matter, and the father even considered withdrawing his contribution to the wedding.

Here’s what the woman had to say.

The woman’s younger brother and his fiancée planned to get married in the spring after being engaged for about a year.

The brother had always been the golden child to their mother, and he and his fiancée were living with her rent-free.

“My dad and I, on the other hand, have mixed feelings about this wedding,” she said.

They felt that the brother was rushing into things and needed to be more financially smart, as he had only finished his bachelor’s degree a year ago and was still trying to find a good full-time job in his field.

The woman and her father sat him down to talk about his need to rush and get married so soon.

“Why not push it off for a few years and save up so you guys can really have the wedding of your dreams?” she asked him.

The brother explained that his fiancée wanted the wedding as soon as possible and didn’t want to wait.

The fiancée’s family offered to contribute to the wedding, so the man’s father reluctantly agreed to contribute a couple of thousand dollars to the wedding too.

One evening, while the woman was having dinner with her husband, she received a call from her future sister-in-law.

After some small talk, the future sister-in-law asked if she could use the woman’s wedding dress, which she had worn just over a year ago.

The sister-in-law explained that she couldn’t afford one herself, loved the woman’s dress, and wanted it to be her “something borrowed.”

The woman immediately refused, saying, “I’m sorry, but no, this is a thousands of dollars dress we’re talking about.”

She was even more annoyed because the women weren’t close and barely spoke, so she shouldn’t have asked something like that.

The future sister-in-law begged and cried, arguing that she couldn’t afford a dress and that the woman wasn’t even financially helping with her brother’s wedding.

“I told her the honest truth, that I think they’re rushing into having a wedding and not being financially smart,” she said.

The future sister-in-law didn’t care because she had a timeline and wanted to be married by 25.

The woman told her, “You made your bed, so now you have to lie in it. If you can’t afford your wedding dress, then you shouldn’t be having a wedding. Simple as that.”

This conversation was repeated to the mother and the brother, who accused the woman of being selfish and unsupportive and dismissing the dress’s importance.

The father, however, sided with the woman and defended her. He has since considered withdrawing his financial help due to the audacity of the brother’s fiancée’s request.

With the family torn over this argument, the woman turned to Reddit to decide if she was right to deny her future sister-in-law’s request.

One person said, “If my brothers wanted to get married, I would tell them congrats, and I’ll see you on your big day. Like, who asks anyone to contribute to their party? Please don’t give these people a dime.”

Another person said, “If she has to alter the dress, then you’ll never be able to wear it again. If you do lend it to her, you’ll probably never see it again cuz she’ll give the excuse that it doesn’t even fit you right anymore. Do not let this woman anywhere near your dress.”

Should the woman have given her sister-in-law the dress?
