Sharing is caring, right? Well, not according to this girl. She’s refusing to share her college fund money with her stepsister. She feels bad that her stepsister will struggle to pay for an education. But at the same time, she doesn’t see why she should have to sacrifice her future.
She has a step-sister
“My dad died when I was 7, and my mom remarried when I was 9. My mom’s husband has a daughter the same age as me, Kerrie,” the woman said.
Her mom stole her college fund
Kerrie’s mother’s behavior is undeniably abhorrent. It has reached such an extreme level that she has resorted to stealing all the money that Kerrie’s father had saved for her college fund.
The money can’t be recovered
Kerrie’s dad took immediate action by reporting the incident to the police, and her mom is now facing the consequences of her actions. However, despite the legal proceedings, the stolen money cannot be recovered. This unfortunate situation has put Kerrie’s educational aspirations at risk, potentially hindering her ability to pursue further education.
The girl’s mom asked her to help
“My mom asked me if I would be willing to share the money dad left me for college with Kerrie,” the woman said. “She told me how good of a sister I would be to help her,” Mom said the family would respect her decision.
She decided not to
The girl was torn. After much soul-searching, she decided she needed that money for her future. Plus, her late dad had given it to her. It would have felt wrong to give it to someone else.
Mom wouldn’t let it go
Mom said OK. However, the girl got the feeling that Mom wasn’t buying it. And she was right. Mom kept bringing the issue up again, poking and prodding the girl to reveal the real reason behind her decision to keep the money.
She eventually cracked
“I told her the truth, that Kerrie and I are not close, we are not sisters, and I don’t want to help someone in such a huge way when I really don’t care about them or even care if they’re in my life,” confessed the girl.
Mom was taken aback
“Mom told me she was surprised I felt that way,” continued the girl. “I pointed out how Kerrie and I never interact like siblings. She told me she figured we still loved each other in some way. I told her we didn’t.”
She was just being honest
The girl was just being honest about how she felt. Still, Mom kept pushing her. She said they are family and obligated to help each other out, regardless of how they feel about each other.
Mom made it known
Mom told the girl she was being selfish. Then she dropped a giant guilt bomb. She said that her dead dad would be angry at her too. Then Mom told her new husband, who now thinks this girl is a jerk.
She shared the story on Reddit
“You are not the jerk,” assured one person. “Please make sure they can’t get hold of that money. Your dad wanted that for you. No one else. Kerrie has her own father and mother to provide for her.”
You don’t have to give her money
“Your mother is out of line,” read a similar comment. “Kerrie is your stepsister. You can acknowledge her as a sibling, but that doesn’t mean you need to like her, love her, or give her your father’s money.”
What do you think? Should she share her college fund with Kerrie?
