As technology progresses and automation becomes increasingly prominent, numerous jobs that were once deemed crucial are expected to become obsolete within the next 20 years. The following 17 professions are projected to disappear by 2043.
Bank Teller
“We barely have any here in Sweden. There are few banks, and they open just two hours daily.”
“Exactly, although you could say that about many jobs in the financial sector; brokers, bankers, and accountants.”
“The sector already has a shortage of workers, and many are aging; automation is the only option left. Luckily, finance is one of the easiest sectors to automate.”
Translator
“That is something I haven’t thought about. Now I don’t feel bad about failing Spanish.”
“The need for translators will be done away with, but they’ll still be around as a status symbol. Being bi or tri-lingual is THE flex.”
“True, but I’d argue some translators will remain. There are plenty of small languages that are still spoken in niche groups. They are unlikely to be translated by machines.”
Real-estate Agents
“They make 5-10% for doing nothing but scaring people into bidding on over-priced properties. By no means should an agent be making what they do for signing some papers; they don’t even have to stage a house anymore! Their bubble WILL burst.”
“I hope so. They have destroyed the market already, over just the last year alone.”
Fast-food Counter Workers
“A lot of fast-food places are starting to get those kiosks, or you order on your phone. Some places are even trying to make machines that will cook the food for you too.”
“At my Mcdonald’s, you MUST order at the kiosk. No one is behind the counter. As soon as they start dropping the food down a chute for you to pick up, the humans will be gone.”
Check-out Workers
“Cashiers will be only the ones that oversee the self-checkouts. Most businesses will hire one person for every six stations so the CEO can pocket the massive savings.”
“Where I work, all the cashiers double as customer service, so there aren’t and pure cashiers anymore. I’m pretty sure this is a cost-saving measure too.”
Long-haul Truckers
“I’m not sure how good AI will ultimately prove in complex situations. We may always need truckers for rural or city driving, but to get on a highway and drive for 20 hours west isn’t difficult for a computer. That employment isn’t going to last.”
Forklift-truck Operator
“I work at a warehouse, and they have drones getting packages 10x faster than a forklift driver can get their harness on, get hooked in, use the forklift, etc. It’s cool, but then I look into the future, and it’s not good job-wise.”
Retail Employees
“I would seriously imagine that a lot of retail is going to be automated and made more convenient for both the buyer and the seller. For the buyer: fast automation. For the seller: WAY fewer employees to pay for.”
Librarian
“If people can read something at home by downloading it on their Kindle, then why bother? There aren’t enough people with a book fetish to make libraries viable.”
“There will probably be something like an online library, so there is no point in having an actual library. If it’s easier, cheaper, and takes up less space, it’ll be a thing.”
Certain Restaurant Staff
“Little Cesar’s employee can’t last! I think by then, and they’ll have Big Cesar’s, right?”
“Papa John’s is going to be Racist Grandpa John’s Who Makes Every Gathering Awkward.”
Sears Employees
“There are roughly 20 full-line Sears stores left in the mainland US, two more in Puerto Rico.”
“Really? I never see them. I thought Sears went out of business.”
Photographer
“I think lots of creative jobs will fundamentally transform, and possibly some niches will disappear.”
“When you look at a stock photography site, a lot of those images are going to be created by AI in the future. Actual photography will still need to be done, but it’ll be a completely different beast, and we won’t need so many photographers.”
Computer Programmer
“A lot of ‘programming’ is basically implementation.”
“Code is already in a format that’s easy for software to reason about, and it’s already stored digitally. That makes it way easier to automate compared to factory work or driving.”
Non-glamorous Jobs
“Think about the next generation of workers; social media being so influential it creates a narrative that you’re going to be a failure if you don’t have your dream job or don’t make more than your parents.”
“Modern kids don’t aspire to be truck drivers, city sanitation workers, warehouse attendants, etc. They want to be influencers and TikTok stars!”
Retail pharmacist
“Retail pharmacies are motivated by prescription count and are burdening pharmacists with stressful targets. The high starting salary is nice, but you’re placed in an environment where the customer is always right, with really no way to advance.”
“I think there will still be a demand, but, if regulations change, this job would be better for computers.”
Roman Legionnaire
“I don’t know… it will probably be a MORE viable career in 20 years than it’s ever been.”
“Got to defend your canned food and water reserves from roaming marauders somehow.”
“Only if the apocalypse doesn’t have guns… or snow.”
Queen of England
“Good! Crazy how she got to spend millions of pounds from the tax dollars of hard-working people on her own estate purely because of birthright.”
“Well, there already isn’t one. The King is making a comeback, though.”
