19 Things Society Need To Stop Putting on a Pedestal

There are many accepted things in our society that we really ought to take a closer look at. Someone recently asked, “What are things we wish society would stop glorying?” and we listed the top 19 answers below.

Working Too Hard

“I do not do anything more than required. I am not being lazy; I am enjoying my life.”

“Working yourself to the bones for corporations who won’t think twice before laying you off makes no sense.”

“A lot of the guys I work with have a collective competition of who can get the most hours on a paycheck. It’s stupid and makes the job miserable.”

High-School

“When I was in high school, and people told me it was the best time of my life, it almost made me suicidal. You’re surrounded by bad people, and your coping skills are just developing – how can it NOT get better?”

“I had the worst time in high school. People were constantly telling me that I’d look back on these years as the best years of my life! I wanted to die because I was living in hell.”

Mental Illness

“A lot of people seem to think depression means being sad all the time. This isn’t wrong, but it’s just more like being attacked by the dementors from Harry Potter (like you’ll never be cheerful again). They were supposed to symbolize depression.”

“It is glorified in general. Someone is not interesting or a creative genius because they are “crazy.” It sucks not knowing if you’ll be able to leave the house day-to-day.”

Being Quick-tempered

“People that say, “I’m a quiet chill person till you cross me.” You sound like edgy teenagers trying way too hard. Just stop.”

“I am not angry until I am. Mmmm, yes, the floor here is the floor.”

“It translates to “I have anger issues” and is basically a way of saying that they’re mean.”

Having OCD

“I am so sick of people claiming they have OCD because they like things orderly. No. That’s called not being a slob. OCD is washing your hands every time you touch something so that your hands begin to bleed.”

“Do you have OCD? Or do you just like having things done a certain way? It’s a serious health issue that can be debilitating, and people will claim it to seem quirky or different.”

Sex

“I’ve seen people practically go suicidal because they were still virgins at 18. Life hasn’t even started yet. Relax.”

“I’ve heard people say if you’re not romantically involved by the second date, it’s not a relationship that will ever go anywhere. That seems absurd to me.”

Not Taking No For An Answer

“The girl has said “no,” but if you keep trying, maybe throw in some illegal stuff like stalking, you’ll get her in the end.”

“I hate the idea that picking up women is an art form. It gives stupid, desperate men the idea that women WANT to talk to them; they just like playing hard to get, and them saying no is part of the hunt.”

Eating Disorders

“They’re not fun; they’re not pretty; it’s not a ‘diet.’ It’s an illness that I have to live and go through every day.”

“What’s romantic about them? For a period of time, I barely ate at all. Every time I stood up, I almost blacked out. I wasn’t even that bad, but still, I felt horrible all the time.”

Child Beauty Pageants

“The fact that some parents force their kids to go to Beauty Pageants for their own financial gain is just disgusting to me.”

“I don’t understand how anyone could find these things anything other than repulsive.”

Self-harm

“It’s like a trend now, and coming from someone whose family was shattered by suicide, it is sadder and much more serious than popular culture, and the media portrays it to be.”

“Exactly. The TV Show ’13 Reasons Why’ still angers me because of this. And people still watch it! It’s sad.”

Celebrities

“Stop glorifying talentless, useless “celebrities” and making them famous.”

“Agreed! Especially rappers, I hate to be the guy to state the obvious, but a lot of newer rappers can literally make inaudible noises and get millions.”

“The worst are those socialite celebrities, like the Kardashians.”

Alcohol

“I think it’s ridiculous that, when someone abstains from drinking, they are pressured to have s specific reason why. Isn’t “I don’t want to consume this drug” good enough?”

“I spent my whole life believing that it was this magical, amazing liquid that everybody could not get enough of. Turns out it just makes you dizzy, nauseated, more stupid, and unable to sleep.”

Criminals

“They get a lot of attention, but it’s for all the wrong reasons.”

“People like this “tiger king” fellow… why do people who do such horrible things end up with Netflix specials?”

“The lady that fed him to the tiger wanted it out there to make him look bad to get sympathy, but all that happened is we just learned she’s a murderer.”

Teachers Sleeping With Their Male Students

“Female teachers raping underage boys and having it be their lucky day? Same thing with female babysitters. It’s not cool. Sure, I had my fantasies as a teenager, but had it actually happened to me, I would’ve been traumatized.”

Being A Teenager

“It’s definitely not the best part of your life; it’s the part where you hate yourself, everyone, and everything.”

“I’m almost 22 and have recently got the idea that I’d wasted my teenage years up until now and had the feeling that I would never be able to have the kind of fun people have up until my age.”

Cheating

“It’s not cute, funny, cool, understandable, or glamorous. It’s the nastiest thing you can do to a trusting partner. It ruins people emotionally, destroys families, messes up children, and spreads diseases. Nothing worse than a lowlife cheater.”

“The least you can do is break up with someone before sleeping with someone else.”

“People on social media do seem remarkably nonchalant about cheating.”

Soulmates

“Finding somebody for life is hard, yet TikTok people seem to think they should find their soulmate when they’re around 18-25.”

“In the 2000s, you started seeing this trope on TV where there is only one person for you. And unfortunately, it has stuck around.”

“If we normalized shorter relationships, people would get a lot less hung up about it.”

Anti-GMO

“Not only are GMOs perfectly safe, but we’ve also been genetically modifying foods since agriculture began; GMOs have saved millions of lives from starvation and malnutrition.”

“Anti-GMO campaigns among corporations are just another marketing scheme that preys on the uninformed and ignorant consumer.”

Military Careers

“I think it is noble to be a soldier when you are defending your country or taking down tyrants, but most of what our army does is just to prop up the US as an empire at the expense of whoever gets in the way.”

“Soldiers are basically pawns for greedy scumbags, and I don’t think what they are doing is worth glorifying or romanticizing.”
