“I Think My Wife’s Best Friend Should Help Pay for Fire Damage on A Fire She Started in Our Home – Am I Wrong?”

A man recently told the story of how his wife’s best friend started a fire in his house after trying out a kitchen hack she learned from a TikTok video. He now wants her to pay for the damages.

Here’s what he had to say.

The man and his wife were expecting a baby and wanted to have a gender reveal party. His wife’s best friend spent the weekend at their house to help with the planning of the party. The man didn’t have a great relationship with his wife’s friend and usually kept a distance. Although she was a great person, he thought she was highly opinionated and always claimed she knew everything. The man was very reserved and could not cope with her fiery personality.

During the visit, they decided to fry some salmon for dinner using a stainless-steel pan. While the man was preparing the ingredients, his wife’s friend told them about a TikTok video she had seen the previous week on preventing things from sticking to a stainless-steel pan.

“Apparently, if you toss a few drops of water and they dance around for more than a few seconds, the pan isn’t hot enough. I found it funny but decided to step aside since she was so keen on taking over,” he said.

The lady left the pan on the fire for over 10 minutes, with the water still “dancing” and heat vapor visibly coming off the pan. “Quite frankly, the pan had never been hotter, but I kept my mouth shut,” he said.

She finally decided that the pan was hot enough and poured some oil into it. As the man expected, almost instantly, the pan caught fire. He said, “Flames were shooting up into the microwave and moving towards the kitchen cabinets. My wife screamed and ran out to get a fire extinguisher.”

It took his wife about 20-30 seconds to find it. By this time, the oil had completely burnt, and the fire had stopped.

The man’s wife and her friend were visibly shaken by the incident. The fire melted the handle of the microwave and damaged the bottom. The man felt it would still work but wasn’t sure of its safety, so he decided to replace it.

He was very upset about the whole situation and told the woman that she had to pay half the cost of the new microwave. He also told her she should have let him cook the meal instead of forcefully taking over.

In her defense, she said she was only trying to teach him something new and felt she didn’t have to pay since it was an accident.

The man was not pleased with her response but managed to stay calm and told her he would discuss the issue with his wife and get back to her the next day.

His wife was a bit on the fence and wasn’t sure if her friend should pay for the damage, or if they should move on.

So, the man asked the Reddit community for advice. Should he make her pay or not?

Many of the commenters felt it was right to ask her to pay, although some thought he could have prevented the incident.

One user said, “Really? Your wife’s friend caused an actual fire. She should pay for the whole thing.”

Another user said, “Most of the videos on TikTok are fake, and people do it for views, your wife’s friend should pay in full, but I also believe you should have stepped in earlier.”

What do you think? Should she pay for half the damages or should he let it go?
