His Neighbors Are Complaining That the School Bus Honks for His Child Every Morning but He Doesn’t Think He’s in the Wrong

A father of a 4-year-old son with special needs recently asked the Reddit community if he is a jerk for letting the school bus driver honk his horn when he is ready to pick up his son.

Here’s what he had to say.

His son attends a special needs school and is picked up every morning by bus. The bus arrives at 7.15 am, and he is dropped off again at 3.15 pm during the school week. The bus driver pulls up to the side of the parking lot closest to their apartment, which is on the first floor. The driver honks the horn a few times, and the father then runs outside with his son and gets him on the bus. In the afternoon, the same thing happens again.

The father waits until he hears the honk, then runs outside and gets the boy off the bus.

The bus driver has had to honk a second time on a few occasions because the father wasn’t ready at exactly 7:15 am. The family lives in the Midwest, and because it’s “freezing cold most mornings,” he didn’t want to make his son wait outside in the cold.

The family lives in a small complex consisting of two buildings with about 20 apartments in each complex. The parking lot is shared between both buildings.

Recently, the dad received two notes on his front door complaining about the honking, and another neighbor said, “I’ve been wondering who’s behind the honking. ” He has now had multiple complaints from the neighbors living in the block and doesn’t really know what to do about it.

The father doesn’t see why anyone would complain about the honking twice daily since his son is autistic and needs the bus. Legally, the noise isn’t a violation, he noted.

The man’s wife thinks he should ask the driver to stop honking, but the father has no intention of doing so. He feels that because his son has special needs, they are perfectly within their rights to get him to school as they see fit. “A few honks twice a day isn’t going to hurt anyone,” he said.

So the man reached out to Reddit and asked if he was a jerk for not being bothered about the honking, and unfortunately for him, the commenters thought he was.

One user wrote, “so… just to get this clear. The bus arrives at roughly the same time every day, right? So why aren’t you getting your child ready for school well before the bus arrives? Your neighbors shouldn’t be punished for your unwillingness to just be ready and waiting when you know the bus is going to arrive.”

Another said, “OP, some people are still asleep at 7:15, and if they are light sleepers, that honking will wake them up. I don’t know about you, but if my sleep was disrupted nearly every day, I would be cranky. Show some consideration for your neighbors and figure something else out.”

Do you think the dad is in the wrong?
