“10 Cloverfield Lane” shifts from a gripping psychological thriller to a sci-fi action movie with the revelation of an actual alien invasion. This genre shift felt abrupt and out of step with the film’s tense, claustrophobic atmosphere.

“The Village” by M. Night Shyamalan starts as a haunting story set in an isolated 19th-century village. The twist reveals the village to be a modern-day experiment, designed to keep inhabitants away from society’s evils. Intended to shock, it felt like a betrayal to viewers invested in the story’s original setting.

“Hancock” began as a refreshing take on the superhero genre, focusing on a flawed, reluctant hero. Midway, the movie revealed that Hancock and his love interest were immortal, drastically changing course. The shift from a superhero tale to a story of immortality and star-crossed love felt disjointed and left many viewers disenchanted.

In “I Am Legend,” Will Smith’s character battles against vampire-like creatures in a post-apocalyptic world. The movie deviated from its source material with a twist that these creatures had a semblance of intelligence. This unexpected turn was meant to add depth but instead, it clashed with the earlier portrayal of the creatures.

Remember Me

“The Happening” by M. Night Shyamalan presented a scenario where plants were mounting a form of self-defense against humanity. Intended as a commentary on environmental issues, the twist came across as implausible and unintentionally comical.

In “Collateral Beauty,” the grieving protagonist’s friends hire actors to play abstract concepts like Death and Time. Intended to be an emotional twist, it instead came off as manipulative and implausible. It left many viewers feeling that the narrative twist was more of a gimmick than a meaningful plot device.

Scarlett Johansson’s character gains superhuman abilities after a drug enhances her brain function. Bizarrely, she finally transforms into a supercomputer, a twist that was intended to be thought-provoking. Unfortunately, this sci-fi element generally felt disconnected and confusing.

Sucker Punch
