20 Movie Characters Who People Hate For No Reason

In movies, some characters fail to connect with our emotions, while others are deliberately portrayed as annoying. In certain cases, characters come off as simply foolish and malicious, so much so that we sometimes end up hating the actors in real life. However, some of these characters don’t deserve half of the backlash they get. Here’s a list of 20 characters people hate for no reason.

Erik Killmonger – Black Panther (2018)

Although Killmonger was the villain of Black Panther, it can be argued that he was just trying to help Black people across the world fight racism and oppression. Furthermore, his father was killed before his eyes by his uncle, adding complexity to his character.

Terence Fletcher – Whiplash (2014)

Driven by passion, Fletcher demands a god-like level of perfection from his students, which breaks most of them. But as the film progresses, the perception of Fletcher evolves, revealing layers of complexity that make him a character deserving of more nuanced understanding rather than outright hatred.

Frodo Baggins – The Lord of the Rings Franchise (2001-2003)

Frodo at numerous times was unappreciative of his friend, Sam. But let’s remember that bearing the ring of power was the biggest burden imaginable, even for the viewers. So, there’s no reason to judge someone with such a dangerous duty. Also, he faced a lot of harm on his journey.

Jenny Curran – Forrest Gump (1994)

Viewers have a deserved dislike for Jenny in Forrest Gump. Despite her erratic behavior around Forrest, we should understand that her actions were influenced by her traumatic childhood experiences, including abuse, which made her a confused person throughout the movie. Eventually, she realizes that Forrest is the only person who cherishes her and the only one she can trust completely.

Beth March – Little Women (2019)

Beth is the second-youngest of four sisters, often referred to as “the sickly girl.” For many, she is also the least favorite of the March sisters, even though she is the sweetest and most caring. A lot of people found her overly needy, which is absolutely unfair. She is a really strong and kind lady. The world certainly deserves more people like her.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel – Captain Marvel (2019)

Poor Carol gets so much backlash for supposedly being very stoic and considerably overpowered, even though she’s actually a pretty universal heroine. She is also very confident and independent and possesses an indomitable willpower. Although fans might hate Brie Larson for her interview comments, there’s no reason not to like Captain Marvel.

Jar Jar Binks – Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

Considered the most annoying character ever, Jar Jar Binks is hated both in the Star Wars universe and by many real-world fans. To many, he comes across as clumsy and clueless—characteristics that are contrasting in a universe filled with heroic figures. However, he was well-nurtured, always wanted to help, and was very trusting. This led to him being manipulated by Palpatine.

Percy Wetmore – The Green Mile (1999)

Percy was a very cold and despicable character. At every point, he displayed heightened levels of cruelty and disregard for human rights; also, he’s responsible for Del’s extremely painful and long, violent death. Percy easily was the most hated character in The Green Mile. However, his presence and character arc contribute to the overall richness and complexity of the movie.

Suellen and Carreen O’Hara – Gone with the Wind (1939)

Often unfairly branded as ‘brats,’ Suellen and Carreen had difficult lives, as they lost their mother and endured constant bullying from Scarlett. Suellen’s fate becomes harsher when Scarlett elopes with her fiancée. Though Suellen exhibits “bratty” behavior, her experiences deserve more empathetic consideration. They are often unjustly disliked by viewers.

Mary Corleone – The Godfather III (1990)

Mary endured a difficult childhood, made even more challenging by being a daughter to The Godfather. Also, in many ways, Mary was his last chance to become a better man. While it’s understandable that many criticized Sofia Coppola’s acting, as she wasn’t a trained actress, her aura and elegance show us what a mobster’s daughter might realistically look like.

China Girl – Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

China Girl lived in a town that was destroyed by winged baboons. With her legs shattered and unable to walk, she hid in the wreckage and was rescued by Oz. China’s character embodies a journey of hope and resilience, making her a character that one would typically root for rather than despise.

Rachel Ferrier – War of the Worlds (2005)

Rachel Ferrier receives undue criticism for her frequent screaming. However, it’s worth considering that anyone might react similarly under life-threatening circumstances. She’s just a scared young girl longing for her mother’s comfort. Can we truly blame her for that?

Elaine Robinson – The Graduate (1967)

Elaine Robinson is often perceived as difficult. However, her behavior can be explained as a reaction to a deeply troubled family dynamic. Her mother treats her poorly, and she also faces physical aggression when leaving her wedding with her fiancée whom her mother was entangled with. She certainly deserves to be cut some slack.

Cho Chang – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

While hated for betraying the Dumbledore family, there’s no valid reason for the hatred, as Cho Chang was given a truth serum by Dolores Umbridge. It was this serum that made her unintentionally betray her friends in their fight against the dark lord.

Ruby Rhod – The Fifth Element (1997)

Even though his job was to be as over-the-top as possible, Ruby Rhod was a lot to handle. He took being annoying to new, undiscovered levels. Ruby may not have played a huge role in the story, but he was still a pretty original and funny character. He also helps Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) fight against the Mangalores.

Kat Stratford – 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Kat was assertive and outspoken, and she was unapologetically vocal about her feminist beliefs, some of which were well ahead of her time. She also didn’t succumb to societal boundaries while maintaining a strong sense of self-confidence. This makes her a truly admirable and fearless individual, yet she is disliked by many.

Daisy Buchanan – The Great Gatsby (2013)

Lovers of The Great Gatsby may be quick to criticize Daisy for her decision to stick with her husband despite loving Gatsby. But many forget that she’s simply a product of society and a victim of situations. Further, a reason fans hate Daisy is because she doesn’t follow the narrative Jay had in his head.

Rose Tico – Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

For me, Rose was a very likable character in The Last Jedi, and the fact that some fans hate her is somewhat puzzling. She’s funny and emotional and serves as a moral guide to Finn, helping him achieve his arc of becoming less-selfish Finn. She also stopped him from his suicide mission and was instrumental in his growth

Maggie – Lucas (1986)

Maggie is hated by many because she can’t reciprocate the love Lucas has for her. Lucas had a hard time wrapping his head around this feeling, and he particularly felt betrayed by Maggie’s decision to date Cappie. While she didn’t fall in love with Lucas, Maggie was always mature about her feelings toward him.

Claire Standish – The Breakfast Club (1985)

Claire, a popular mean girl, initially appears composed and confident, but she grapples with deep family emotional turmoil and her own insecurities. Despite these challenges, Claire displays vulnerability and exceptional loyalty to her friends. She persuades Brian out of suicide and helps boost Allison’s self-esteem, illustrating her capacity for kindness and empathy.
