19 Really Dumb Movies We All Secretly Enjoy Watching

Sometimes a movie comes along that, on the surface, seems silly, over-the-top, or downright nonsensical. Yet, occasionally, these obviously ‘dumb’ films manage to entertain us despite (or even because of) their level of stupidity! A recent online survey asked people, “What are some dumb movies that were actually kind of good?” Here are the top 19 replies:

Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)

“While it’s a dumb kids’ movie mostly made for a quick buck, I actually thought it was good. Does it have good storytelling? Nope. Did I see the twist ending coming from a mile away? Yes. Was I laughing and enjoying myself all the way through? Absolutely.”

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

“Dumb and Dumber was actually so clever with its jokes. I can’t say the same about the sequel.”

“Hey, wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world? Lloyd: ‘Aaaeeeeehhh!!’ Mental: ‘GUYS-GUYS-GUYS.’ That scene was improvised from what I’ve heard.”

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

“This movie is the literal poster child for this post. So stupid but so unbelievably funny.”

“The bit when he asks her if she’s drinking low-fat milk because she thinks she’s fat, and then says she could drink full-fat milk if she wanted. Best compliment ever!

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

“You think it’s just a dumb stoner movie, and it is. But it’s also a hugely entertaining stoner movie, which is surprisingly awesome.”

Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

“Go ahead and laugh. We are used to being mocked. Okay, hahahahaha.”

“I vote for this one too. It’s Stiffler (American pie) and that dude out of ‘That 70’s Show’ being totally stupid, but I dare you not to laugh out loud a few times.”

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

“Agree. The two Hot Tub Time Machine films are a lot of fun to watch!”

“The first one was definitely entertaining, but the second was just garbage, in my opinion.”

“Honestly, I enjoyed them both. But I will only admit that anonymously.”

Who Killed Captain Alex? (2010)

“Honestly, I thought I was watching this out of curiosity and a few laughs, but it grabs you and doesn’t let go. I’m totally a fan of these guys now.”

“Can’t wait for the sequel. If it’s anything like the first one, we are in for one good ride.”

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017)

“Both this movie and the original LEGO movie are both way better than movies about building blocks have any right to be.”

“Yeah! It sounds dumb and has some dumb stuff, but overall it’s mind-blowingly awesome.”

Aquaman (2018)

“Such a stupid idea, but Jason Momoa somehow managed to knock the ball out of the park.”

“If you had told me in 2018 that my favorite superhero movie of that year would have been a movie about a guy whose superpower is talking to fish, I would have laughed out loud.”

Little Nicky (2000)

“It’s a typical ‘underdog’ movie, but I had so much fun, mostly because of the hilarious side characters. There’s a talking bulldog. Henry Winkler gets covered in bees. Quentin Tarantino is a blind preacher who harasses him on the street due to his demonic blood. Hilarious.”

What’s Up, Tiger Lily? (1966)

“It takes an Asian action film (this time, a spy flick), strips off its audio track, and replaces all the dialogue with a new nonsense story.”

“It’s old and ridiculous, but no comedy directed by Woody Allen can be wrong.”

Zoolander (2001)

“The first time, it was ridiculous. The second time, I loved it. Now it’s my favorite stupid movie.”

“The premise alone is fantastic: hypnotizing idiot models to kill a president who wants to implement child labor laws so the fashion industry can continue to make cheap clothes!”

Commando (1985)

“That simultaneous level of absolute dumbness and absolute awesomeness is extremely rare. Arnold did other dumb movies, but none were nearly as good. The only other movies Arnold did that were as good or better were very clever. So what Commando achieved was very special.”

Hellraiser 3 (1992)

“I was a fan of the series, and this was the first one I saw in the cinema. Even though they turned Pinhead into more of a Freddy Kreuger-style character, I still enjoyed it, and the cenobite throwing CDs was so dumb but great. Definitely one of my guilty pleasure films to watch.”

Furious 7 (2015)

“I argue Furious 7 pulled it off because of James Wan. So amazingly stupid and yet genuinely exciting. The sequels tried to be as ridiculous and still be good, but it’s not realistically possible to sustain that level of stupidity at high quality.”

Daddy Day Care (2003)

“Apparently, everyone thinks Daddy Day Care is terrible, but I found it fun and harmless. A little formulaic, but still enjoyable.”

“It was kind of good. The cast was awesome. Anything with Eddie Murphy is good, though.”

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

“I know people hate it, but I had a blast at the cinema. My dad and I were just laughing and making fun of the movie when ridiculous moments happened. It’s such a nonsensical plot, so we treated it like an action-comedy going in.”

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist! (2002)

“I’ll suggest the movie that was the precursor to or inspiration for What’s Up, Tiger Lily?”

“It’s an old-fashioned Asian film that’s been turned into a kung-fu action movie. A lot of fun!”

Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)

“This is it right here: the blueprint for stupid movies.”

“It’s not even a straight movie; it’s more a collection of ridiculous satirical sketches spoofing movies and TV shows. It mocks every cliche there is and has some great celebrity cameos.”
