19 Movies That Just Didn’t Make Sense

Movies are like creative paintings on a canvas of imagination. They bend reality to tell special stories and make us see things differently. But sometimes, movies push too far with unbelievable stuff, almost as if intended for an unintelligent audience. In this post, we will look at 19 films that don’t make sense.

Smolensk (2016)

The whole plot of Smolensk has been regarded as dull and boring to some viewers.  Although based on real-life events, the movie took a lot of creative freedom, with its plot largely based on conspiracy theories instead of what actually happened.

Grease (1978)

The strange part of this movie is the ending. Sandy changed her entire personality for Danny, who in turn had become preppy for her, and then they magically flew away in a car that didn’t have any supernatural quality until that exact point.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

This comedy movie looks good at the beginning with its farce, mime, and wisecracks, but the plotline is simply uninspiring. From the taking back of a guy who dumped you at the altar to sleeping with a rando before your wedding, several plot elements make this movie a tad senseless.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

It starts off as a rom-com but takes a twisted turn into the dark psychological thriller genre. The unpleasant main character, Julianne Potter, finds a happy ending with George, all without ever facing the consequences of her actions.

Remember Me (2010)

Remember Me was a nice coming-of-age film, but it upset some people by tying up its ending to 9/11. In the final scene, the teacher wrote 9/11 on the board, and Tyler was in the World Trade Center. Using a national tragedy as a plot twist left a bitter taste in many viewers and critics’ mouths.

Gone with the Wind (1939)

The takeaway of this movie must have been in the line, “Just give up when things get tough, then regret it later,” because I don’t understand why it took Rhett and Scarlett four hours and a civil war to still not end up together.

Pretty Woman (1990)

In this classic fairytale movie, Vivian is a vivacious prostitute who meets a wealthy man on a Hollywood street corner. While the film’s plot defies societal norms, its premise is strange and questionable. It’s hard to ignore how improbable the entire storyline is.

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)

Having grossed $178 million worldwide, one would think this movie would promote an old-fashioned way to dating. However, when each woman in the cast gets with a particular type of man, they end up changing them. The notion that this movie tries to sell us—that each man is the exception to the rule—is ridiculous.

Practical Magic (1998)

This movie is strange. Two witches, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, kill Kidman’s boyfriend and bury him in his backyard. The detective investigating the matter falls in love with Bullock, and they ride off to the sunset (metaphorically speaking).

500 Days of Summer (2009)

I personally found this movie unbearable right from the beginning. It has so many problems, but the ending takes the cake as the chief issue for many. After the tumultuous relationship with Summer, the male lead meets a new woman with the name Autumn. Why the title, then?

The Devil Inside (2012)

Some movies are ruined by their endings, but The Devil Inside technically doesn’t even have one. It simply ends by telling viewers to visit a website. No conclusion, no resolution, just an invite to go to a website for more information on the ongoing investigation.

Lucy (2014)

We are not exactly sure what happens to the titular character in Lucy, and it makes for an underwhelming movie. Having reached 100 percent of brain capacity, she completely disappears? Or did she turn into a supercomputer? We will never know because we just see her voice show up on every bad guy’s phone, saying she’s everywhere.

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Super Mario Bros. ended on a note that hinted at a sequel that never came. But that’s only one of the several problems with this film. Compared to the beloved video game it’s based on, this movie comes off as lousy and subpar.

Blazing Saddles (1974)

With a name like Mel Brooks in the cast of this movie, one may have expected a bit of silliness, but Blazing Saddles is a step too far. After a tacky plot, there’s no proper ending; we just see the actors running to the lot for a huge crazy brawl.

The Grey (2011)

In this survival movie, Ottway, a seasoned expert on grey wolves, leads the victims away from danger but unexpectedly guides them straight into the wolves’ path. Instead of a dramatic showdown, the movie ends abruptly with humans and wolves charging at each other, leaving viewers confused.

Robot Monster (1953)

Photo Credit: Three Dimension Pictures, Inc.

This movie is considered one of the worst movies ever made, and for good reason. The whole plot was based on a dream that Johnny had while he had a concussion. None of the things in the entire movie happened. This is admittedly not a strange concept in cinema, but it doesn’t work in Robot Monster, as the plot is subpar.

Now You See Me (2013)

Throughout this $351.7 million-grossing movie, Mark Ruffalo’s character tries to capture the heisting illusionist. Plot twist: he’s the mastermind behind the group and a magician while also being an FBI agent. Somehow, it ends up leading to a sequel.

Knowing (2009)

Knowing is just as bad as it is meaningless. In the end, aliens/angels save kids from Earth’s destruction by solar flare using intergalactic arks. The movie certainly had a few great moments. However, its plot is too absurd to be enjoyable in any meaningful way.

Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

While the Jaws film series started out great, this fourth installment was anything but. In Jaws: The Revenge, a shark goes after the Brody family for revenge, which is extremely absurd. The worst part? The shark roars like a lion at the end, making it even more ridiculous.
