14 Movies That Grossly Exaggerated Historical Facts

Movies based on historical events can be both informative and entertaining, but some take creative liberties with the facts. In this post, we’ll look at 16 movies that played fast and loose with history, either for dramatic effect or to simplify complex events, and explore the consequences of these choices.

Braveheart (1995)

This epic portrayal of William Wallace’s fight for Scotland’s independence won critical acclaim, but was riddled with inaccuracies. Kilt-wearing Scots and the portrayal of the Battle of Stirling Bridge without a bridge were among the most glaring issues.

300 (2006)

While a visually stunning masterpiece, 300’s representation of the Battle of Thermopylae is heavily fictionalized. The Spartans wore more than just loin cloths, and Persian king Xerxes wasn’t a 9-foot-tall giant adorned in gold.

Gladiator (2000)

Ridley Scott’s film grossly misrepresents Roman Emperor Commodus, who is portrayed as a sociopathic villain. In reality, Commodus was indeed a problematic ruler but he did not murder his father, nor was he killed in the arena.

Pocahontas (1995)

Disney’s portrayal of the titular character’s relationship with John Smith is wildly inaccurate. Pocahontas was a child when Smith arrived in Virginia, and there’s no historical evidence to support a romantic relationship between the two.

Mel Gibson’s Revolutionary War drama simplifies and misrepresents many aspects of the actual conflict. The British are presented as near-demonic, and several battles and timelines are either fictional or significantly altered

Pearl Harbor (2001)

Despite its dramatic premise, Pearl Harbor misrepresents several aspects of the infamous attack. The movie includes fictionalized characters and love stories, exaggerated aerial combat scenes, and several timeline inaccuracies.

Mel Gibson’s portrayal of the Mayan civilization is filled with inaccuracies. The film misrepresents Mayan culture, includes architectural inaccuracies, and incorrectly associates the Mayans with human sacrifice, a practice more common in the later Aztec civilization.

Troy (2004)

This dramatized interpretation of Homer’s ‘Iliad’ takes liberties with the epic poem’s events and characters. While entertaining, its portrayal of the Trojan War does not align with the literary source or archaeological findings.

Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

This Ridley Scott film set during the Crusades significantly alters history. The portrayal of several historical figures, the timeline, and the depiction of the Siege of Jerusalem are all far from historically accurate.

The Da Vinci Code (2006)

The premise of this film revolves around an alternative religious history that has been widely criticized for its historical and theological inaccuracies, such as the alleged marriage between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Although the film is intended to be fictional, its portrayals of William Shakespeare and the creation of his works are historically inaccurate. The romantic liaison between Viola and Shakespeare, the conception of “Romeo and Juliet,” and Queen Elizabeth’s public attendance at a play are all elements of pure fiction

Amadeus (1984

While an entertaining drama, the depiction of composer Antonio Salieri as a jealous rival orchestrating Mozart’s downfall is purely fictional. The two were contemporaries and likely rivals to some degree, but the movie grossly exaggerates their relationship.

Argo (2012)

The film, based on the “Canadian Caper” during the Iran hostage crisis, minimizes Canada’s significant role. The movie paints a picture of the CIA as the sole heroes, while in reality, the escapees were largely saved by the effort of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor.

The Greatest Showman (2017)

This musical biopic of P.T. Barnum glosses over many controversial aspects of his life, presenting a sanitized version of a man known for his exploitative practices. The film romanticizes Barnum’s career, leaving out his numerous ethical and business failings.
