This Woman Lets Her Kids Call Their Aunt ‘Grandma’ but Now Heir Real Grandmother Is Hurt and Wants It To Stop

A woman recently got into trouble with her mom for allowing her aunt to call the kids’ grandma’. Her mom is not impressed, and the woman is unsure of whether she is in the wrong.

Here is what she had to say.

The 25-year-old woman is a single mom with four daughters. An eight-year-old, two six-year-olds, a four-year-old, and a two-year-old son.

The woman and her aunt, Lynn, are really close. When she was divorcing her ex-husband, her aunt Lynn was there for her and still is even now.

She would consider herself closer to her aunt Lynn than her own mother, as they have “a lot of issues.”

“Mostly, it stems from the religion she chooses to practice. She doesn’t believe in divorce,” she said about her mother.

“But I’m not going too much in-depth with that because that’s what she chooses to practice.”

The woman’s parents live in the country, about 45 minutes away. As such, she does not see them often.

Her aunt Lynn, however, lives just three minutes away from her.

Lynn has lost both her husband and only child but adores the woman’s children, and the feeling is mutual.

She always wants to babysit them when she can and has attended every event her children have had.

The woman’s children are close to Lynn, so much so that they call her ‘grandma.’

At a recent family gathering, both the woman’s mother and aunt Lynn were in attendance. The woman saw her mother get annoyed each time the children called Lynn “grandma.”

To make matters worse, her two-year-old, who is very picky about who he feels comfortable around, only wanted to be with Lynn.

He would cry each time the woman’s mother tried to hold him.

Recently, the woman received a call from her father. He told her that her mother was very hurt that Lynn was called ‘grandma.’

She was already insecure about the close bond the children shared with Lynn.

Her dad suggested it was perhaps time for the woman to start correcting her children and call Lynn their aunt rather than their grandma.

“I told my dad that I really don’t see the issue with the kids calling my aunt Lynn ‘grandma,’ given they also call my mom ‘grandma,'” she said.

In response, her father told her that she was being a jerk as the title of grandma means a lot to her mother, and it was being stripped away from her.

As such, the woman asked the Reddit community if she is, in fact, wrong for having let her children call her aunt Lynn ‘grandma’ for so long.

Fortunately for the woman, the majority of people were on her side.

“If you’re semi-estranged from your mother because of her religion, then it’s entirely within her control to fix,” said one person.

“If she doesn’t see the kids often enough for them to have a close relationship with her, then that’s also her fault.”

“I’m glad you and the kids have your aunt to care about the lot of you. Sounds like your mom deserves better when she does better.”

“Kids can have more than one grandma, and it sounds like Lynn is earning that role and name,” said another commenter.

What do you think? Is the woman right to let her children call her aunt Lynn for ‘grandma’?
