This guy’s wife wants to take their daughter on a special vacation without their son to even the score for her brother’s trip to Disney World. He says it’s ridiculous and refuses to punish their son like this.
Now his wife is calling him a jerk.
Here’s what happened.
This family drama started when their son’s best friend turned 13.
“In his family, the thirteenth birthday is a huge deal,” posted the guy on Reddit. “In addition to a massive party (to which all four of us were invited), his parents also took him to Disney World. They invited my son as well.”
Dad had no issue with it, but mom did.
“My wife was hesitant to consent,” shared the guy. “She said it was unfair to allow our son to go when our nine-year-old daughter can’t. Especially since she loves Disney and princesses.”
Dad said their kids won’t always have the exact same opportunities, and if they set a precedent here, they’ll have to stick to it forever.
The guy’s wife reluctantly agreed and said they should allow their son to go.
Dad gave his son some extra money to buy souvenirs for his sister, which he did. His friend’s parents did the same, so he returned bearing loads of gifts for his Disney-loving sister.
But the plan to keep his sister happy didn’t work. Instead, it backfired big time.
“When she saw him come back wearing a Star Wars shirt with the Mickey hat and trading pin lanyard, she burst into tears,” said Dad. “My wife said we made a huge mistake and never should have let him go.”
Dad wasn’t sure, but he thought that was the end of the issue.
Then this happened:
“My brother-in-law invited all of us to visit a beach house he rented for a summer send-off,” shared the guy. “My wife told me she wants to have our son stay with my dad and just take our daughter to ‘even the score.'”
In other words, she wants to exclude their son from a family vacation as a punishment and to make his sister feel better.
Dad was furious. In his opinion, this was one of those rare occasions when the foot needed to come down.
“I told my wife that isn’t happening,” said the dad. “We can’t favor one child over the other. Not being invited to the birthday trip of a kid you barely know is in no way comparable to being left out of a family vacation.”
He’s still shocked she’d suggest such a thing and refuses to allow it.
His wife is super angry, but he doesn’t care.
He shared this story on Reddit and asked community members what they thought about his parenting approach.
“Not the jerk,” posted one person. “Your wife sounds like she has a clear favorite out of the two kids and isn’t afraid to show it. Of course, your son should go on vacation with you all. I’m shocked that she would want him to miss out. It’s awful.”
“Not only does she want him to miss out, but she also doesn’t want to spend a family vacation with all of her family?” asked another. “I look forward to family vacations BECAUSE I get to spend time with my kid.”
