A man told the Reddit community that his brother-in-law and his daughters had moved into his house, and the girls were invading his daughter’s privacy. He decided to put a lock on his daughter’s room. His sister and brother-in-law were not pleased with his decision.
Here’s what happened.
The man is happily married and has a 16-year-old daughter named Zoey. His brother-in-law, Sammy, went through a divorce and lost his house, after which he moved into the man’s house with his 18-year-old twin daughters, Olivia and Sloane.
The twins weren’t close to Zoey but got along just fine.
Unfortunately, Olivia and Sloane had no respect for Zoey’s privacy and always walked into her room to pick anything they could lay their hands on.
Items like phone accessories, makeup, clothes, laptop, etc. Nothing was off limits for them, and Zoey didn’t like it, and she always expressed her displeasure.
The man had a talk with the twins and told them to respect Zoey’s privacy, but his request fell on deaf ears. His wife and Sammy didn’t think it was an issue. They felt it was normal teenage behavior and didn’t try to caution them.
“The last straw was when Zoey bought a 60$ M.A.C makeup kit which Sloane took without permission and ended up ruining it by mixing different shades together while she was trying it on,” the man said.
When Zoey found the used kit on her bed, she was very upset and started crying. The man told his wife, and she asked Sloane to apologize to Zoey.
The man felt it would take more than an apology that time, so he decided to find a lasting solution to the persistent issue.
“I got Zoey a lock for her room after I found out that she was taking valuable belongings out of the house because of this incident!” he said.
When Sammy and his daughters saw the lock, they weren’t happy. The girls were extremely upset. Sammy said to the man, “My daughters aren’t thieves! It’s normal for girls of a similar age to borrow each other’s stuff.”
He went further to say that Zoey could easily replace the makeup kit for 15$ at Walmart and had no business buying expensive adult makeup.
He suggested that Zoey had a “defect” in her personality and was trying to appear like an older person. In his opinion, the man was being overprotective of Zoey and enabling her.
The man’s wife wasn’t pleased with his actions as well. “She shamed me for putting a lock on Zoey’s door, which was preventing her cousins from spending time with her,” the man said.
She asked him to remove the lock, but he insisted on leaving it. He told her he would only remove it after her brother and his daughters had moved out.
This upset her. Further, she didn’t like that he was suggesting that they ask them to leave.
She told him that her family would hate him if that were to happen. He reminded her that Sammy had moved into their home because her family didn’t take him in. If it weren’t for her family’s unwillingness to help, they wouldn’t have had to deal with the inconvenience in the first place.
Sammy and his daughters started to ignore the man and Zoey, while his wife remained very upset about the situation.
So, the man asked the Reddit community if it was wrong of him to put a lock on Zoey’s door.
Most of the commenters were on his side.
One user said, “don’t back down. You are the only one sticking up for Zoey. If her cousins want to use expensive makeup, give them your wife’s own. I can guarantee that she will get the message.”
Another user said,” I had a similar experience when I was a teenager, my dad also got me a lock, and it made me feel supported. This dude is doing a great service to his daughter. A teen needs privacy and security.”
What do you think? Was the dad right to put a lock on the door?
