The 28-year-old woman has a stepsister, Jen, who is 29.

Their parents got together when the girls were teenagers, and they never clicked. The woman has nothing against her stepsister. The two just are not that close.

The woman worked at her stepfather’s company alongside her step-sister for four years. Though the woman has moved on, her sister still works there.

While there, the woman became friendly with her colleague, Pete.

“Everyone in the office would joke about Pete having a crush on me, but I never saw him like that, and he never said anything, so I didn’t pay much attention to the possibility,” she said.

“However, when I started dating my now-husband, things got awkward with Pete.”

When the woman quit her job, she and Pete did not really stay in touch. They followed each other on social media but did little else.

Some months after she left, she saw on Pete’s social media that he had started seeing Jen, her stepsister!

Last year, Pete and Jen got engaged, and the woman’s stepfather, Jen’s father, has since agreed to pay for the wedding.

A few weeks ago, an old colleague of the woman’s got married, so she, Jen, Pete, and her parents all attended the wedding.

“Pete was a little over-friendly at the reception, which I put down to alcohol,” she said.

“Later in the evening, though, I was outside getting some air, and Pete came out and basically propositioned me. I made it clear I was extremely uncomfortable and went back inside.”

The following day, the woman called her stepsister and told her everything that had happened.

Jen accused the woman of attempting to ruin her relationship. Since she had already done enough to sabotage her, she should not make the situation worse by informing her stepdad.

This was something the woman agreed to.

Some weeks after the incident, the woman was talking to her parents over Skype, and they were talking about Jen’s upcoming wedding.

When Pete was mentioned, the woman’s parents noticed a change in her face and asked her what was wrong.

It transpired that they had seen Pete follow the woman at the wedding, which led to them formulating their own theories on what happened.

Their assumptions were worse than what actually went on, which the woman soon explained to them.

Since Jen and Pete had worked it out, she asked them not to do anything about it, but her stepfather was livid.

He called Jen, and the two had a huge fight, leading to him refusing to pay for or attend the wedding.

Jen has been calling and texting the woman and making social media posts about what a horrible person she is for ruining her wedding.

Her friends have messaged the woman telling her how awful she has been, and they told her that she should just have kept quiet.

The wedding has now been canceled due to the incident, and her stepfather is now not speaking to Jen at all.

As such, the woman reached out to the Reddit community, asking whether she was in the wrong for what she did.

Fortunately for the woman, many people were on her side.

“The wedding has not been canceled because of you. It’s been canceled because of Pete,” said one person.

“I doubt this is the first time Pete has done this to a woman, and that’s why your parents thought the worst of what happened.”

“That was probably the last straw.”

“The fact that your parents jumped to thinking he assaulted you instead of flirting, or a sexist comment says a lot about what they think of him,” said another commenter.

“This is on Pete, not you.”

What do you think? Did the woman do the right thing by telling her parents what happened?
