His Parents Demanded He Pay Rent for Living at Home so He Moved Out and Now Feels Guilty

A young man feels guilty about moving into his own apartment and leaving his parents to take care of all the household bills and his four younger siblings.

This guy is 23 years old and the oldest of five siblings. Both his parents work long hours in tough and demanding jobs. So when this guy was living at home, he took on many responsibilities of looking after the house and caring for his brother and sisters.

He did many of the chores and then some

He did grocery shopping, did the laundry, made supper, and did all the meal prep to make sure his siblings had lunch for school every day. He also helped his siblings with chores, including looking after and walking the family dogs.

He worked incredibly hard

As you can imagine, he didn’t get much time for himself. Because in addition to all these family duties, he was also studying and working part-time.

He finally decided to treat himself

Last Christmas, he rewarded himself by buying a new PS5 with money he’d saved. He kept the new console in his room, leaving the other siblings to share an old PS4 in the living room.

But his siblings weren’t satisfied

Eventually, one of his brothers complained to their parents. They said it wasn’t fair that his older brother bought nice things for himself and didn’t let others use them.

When the parents confronted the guy, he agreed he wasn’t sharing. But, considering everything he did around the house, he felt it was fair to have a few things just for himself.

His parents started asking for more money

His parents realized he must have been making decent money to afford a brand-new PS5. So they asked him to start contributing to the rent and bills.

The guy did the math. He would be left with just $800 a month if he gave his parents the amount they wanted.

He had enough and moved out

He didn’t think this was right. So he dropped a few classes, picked up some more shifts at work, and moved out of the family home.

“I packed up and moved out. Everything I owned fit in my car. I stayed at an Airbnb for two weeks until I could get everything sorted with an apartment, school, and work. It was great,” posted the guy on Reddit.

He loves his new life

He’s having the time of his life, enjoying everything young guys enjoy when they move into their place for the first time. In other words, he’s been on Tinder quite a lot!

But his family is not happy

But his family is seriously annoyed and angry with him.

The guy’s older brother has been forced to pick up all the slack. He says he has no time for anything else, including spending time with his girlfriend.

And he’s starting to feel guilty

And his parents are upset that he would rather move out than stay in the family home to support everyone.

“I feel bad for screwing them all over,” said the man. “But it didn’t make sense for me to do all that work and pay rent on top. Plus, I’m enjoying my free time and bought myself a plant from IKEA.”

What should he do?

He asked the Reddit community if he was wrong for leaving home, but they all agreed with him.

One user said, “It’s your life. You’re an adult. I say good for you. You seem headed in a good direction.”

Another said, “NTA. Now they get neither chores nor rent from you. They played themselves. Enjoy your apartment!”

Do you think it was okay for the guy to move out after his parents started charging him rent?
