A young woman recently asked the Reddit community what she should do to stop her mom from wearing her clothes out on dates.
The 20-year-old had asked her mom repeatedly to stop wearing her clothes. To be fair to the mom, she recently lost a lot of weight and seemed very excited to wear ‘younger-looking clothes.’
However, the real issue was that she had recently started dating a man much younger than herself. The daughter, therefore, is uneasy with the fact that her mom is wearing her clothes specifically to look and feel more youthful so she can keep up with the guy.
Although the daughter admits that “we usually share jackets and stuff like that,” the big difference is that before the weight loss and the new boyfriend, “she never wanted to wear any of my other stuff because I’m into alternative/goth fashion,” the young woman said. Her mom usually likes to dress business casual, so there was never an overlap.
Unfortunately, the situation has turned sour as the young woman feels like she is constantly putting her mom down or telling her that she is too old to wear that kind of clothes. She loves her mom very much and wants her to be happy, but that is why it’s such a difficult issue.

She doesn’t actually think that her mom is too old to be wearing clothes like her and said “she looks really good for her age”. The young woman is happy for her mom to wear whatever she wants as long as it isn’t hers.
“I love my mom, but it grosses me out because she wore my favorite leather jacket on her first date with the guy,” she explained.
Later on, the mom told her daughter all the intimate details about what happened on the date, which was simply too much.
The daughter thinks it’s wearing that her mom is wearing her clothes when being intimate with her new boyfriend.
“It’s uncomfortable, and I don’t know how to kindly tell her to stop. I’ve already suggested we go shopping together, but it hasn’t happened yet”.
So the woman asked the Reddit community if she was right to ask her mom to stop wearing her clothes, and they all agreed she needed to fix the problem ASAP.
One person wrote, “the ick” is right. Your mother’s behavior is honestly creepy. You’re less than half her age! And even if you were closer in age, wearing your clothes without your permission is simply unacceptable.”
Another said, “They are your clothes and your possessions. They are not hers to help herself to. I also felt a bit of the “oh, she’s trying to be younger too” feeling. Bring up going clothes shopping with her again, and you have to have a conversation about how you feel about her taking your clothes.”
