A man recently asked the Reddit community if it’s OK for him to be present when his sister gives birth, even though his wife does not like the idea of it.
He is going to be an uncle
The man, who is 40 years old, has a younger sister named Beth, who is 28 years old. Beth is in the final stages of her pregnancy and is expected to give birth in a few weeks. Currently, she lives in a different state than her brother.
He wants to support his sister
Beth is going through a challenging period in her life as her brother describes her husband, who is divorcing her, as unpleasant. Meanwhile, their mother is providing care for their father after his recent heart surgery. No one is there for her.
She’s completely alone
Beth’s best friend also had to back out of attending the birth due to a family emergency, and her sister could not get the time off of work from her job, which is overseas.
She’s really stressed
As such, Beth rang her brother and cried to him about how alone she felt in the lead-up to the birth. Beth was really panicking about the idea of having a caesarian section, which the doctor told her she might need to have.
Her brother said he’d come
The man let her cry on the phone for around an hour until his “big brother” mode kicked in when he offered to fly out and be with her to support her.
He didn’t think that his wife would mind
“It was something I did without any real thought, but I meant it because this was my baby sister, and she was going through a rough time and told me she was scared,” he said.
He can get time off
The man works in a job where he can get permission to work from home rather than in the office. He is well-liked and quite respected at his work, so his boss was willing to let him travel so long as his performance did not decline.
His wife isn’t happy
She thinks he should stay home
Kim told her husband that he needed to stay home to be with their children and that Beth should either find somebody else to be with her or go through it alone.
His three kids don’t mind
The man’s two sons, Cody and Connor, who are 13 and seven years old, respectively, and his 10-year-old daughter Chelsea are fine with him leaving for a time, as they know their aunt is going through a challenging period.
He’s still going
However, Kim insisted that the children were lying and did not want him to go.In response, the man said that even if that were true, he was still planning to go as his sister needed him.
His wife thinks it’s strange
This caused a huge fight, in which Kim admitted, in the heat of the moment, that she did not want the man to attend the birth as she thought it would be weird.
He didn’t see his own kids’ birth
“This brought up old wounds for me since I was denied access to the birthing room for all three of my children as Kim only wanted her mom and sister there,” he said.
This is his chance
The man has said that Beth’s baby would be the first and potentially only time he’d see a baby born in real life, something that Kim does not like.
They’re both angry
Angered by what his wife had said, he retorted by mentioning the births of his children and that if she did not want him to leave, she could call his family and explain it to them. The man does not want to break his sister’s heart, but his wife is angry and says he’s a jerk.
The man asked the Reddit community
Thankfully, a lot of people online understand the man’s position.
“Your wife thinking that it is weird for an uncle to be present for the birth of their niece/nephew is not reason enough for your sister to go through this experience alone,” said one commenter.
Don’t cause her more stress
“Your sister has already had so many people revoke their offers of support. To have you do so would cause a lot of unnecessary stress.”
