A woman chewed out her sister at a family function for dumping her baby on her daughter while she got drunk. But now the whole family thinks this woman is the jerk. Let’s see what she has to say about it.
They were always doing stuff as a family
“When I was a teenager, my parents would have me and my siblings go with them to events and functions with their friends and would often host family-friendly get-togethers at our place,” said the woman. She loved it. It made her feel part of a community, and she got to hang out with kids her own age.
She noticed a change
But as she got older, things began to change. “When I was 12 or 13, I would notice that a lot of these parents would come and just abandon their kids on our big property,” she explained. And as the oldest of the kids, she felt like she had to be responsible and keep an eye on the youngsters.
They made her the babysitter
This went on for a few months. And soon after, she became the unofficial babysitter for all the kids. “It became the norm for the same families to dump their kids on me whenever they were with my parents at one of these social functions,” said the woman.
It ruined her childhood
She was a kid put in charge of other kids, and it impacted her teenage years. “I spent a massive chunk of my teen years going to socials where I just became a free nanny,” she confessed. She never felt like she could say no to the adults.
She missed out
Not doing all the stuff teenagers do made her feel like an outsider and even a loser. “I remember seeing my older sister chatting with her friends and all sorts of cute boys while I was cast to the side, sweaty, stressed out, and making sure kids don’t stick their fingers in electrical outlets or something.”
Nobody helped her
She confided in her older sister and asked her for some help. But her sister said no. She was having too much fun.
It brought back painful memories
All these painful memories came flooding back at a recent family gathering. “My parents had a big party in their yard, and my sister has a five-year-old,” said the woman.
Her daughter became the babysitter
Less than an hour into the party, the sister asked the woman’s daughter to take care of her five-year-old while she chatted with friends. The woman didn’t think much of it at the time.
She was stuck babysitting
But when she checked in an hour later, her daughter was still stuck on babysitting duties. That made her mad. Her sister was putting her daughter in the same position she’d hated as a teenager.
She confronted her sister
She decided to call out her sister’s selfish behavior. “I found my sister standing in the air-conditioned living room with a drink in her hand, laughing and talking with friends,” she said.
She said it wasn’t fair
The woman pulled her sister aside. “I asked her why she would make my daughter babysit for free and that it was unfair to shirk responsibility onto my kid when she should be enjoying time with her friends,” said the woman.
The sister didn’t care
But the message didn’t get through. The sister was only interested in herself. “She responded that she ‘wanted a break because it is hard being a single mother, and she just wanted to have fun today,'” explained the angry mom.
It got nasty
Now the woman was super angry. She lost her cool and dropped some truth bombs on her sister. “I told her that if she couldn’t handle being a single mom, then she ‘should have kept her legs shut,'” admitted the mom.
Things escalated
The argument blew up into a huge confrontation. The woman and her family left the party early.
They hated on her
Since then, she’s been getting non-stop messages from the rest of her family calling her a jerk. Even her husband thinks she was out of order.
She was confused
The woman admits she said some nasty things to her sister. Still, she believes that her daughter was being taken advantage of. So she’s asking, “Am I the jerk here?”
The internet gave its answer
“Not the jerk,” said one person. “Good for you for standing up for your daughter. Female teenage relatives should not be the automatic go-to for free or compulsory babysitting. You definitely get a ‘great mom’ award.”
“Babysitting takes time, and it should be compensated for,” posted another. “Yes, it’s tough being a single parent, but take responsibility or at least pay the person.”
