This man told the neighbors to stop parking in his driveway, and now his own wife is calling him a rude jerk. Here’s what happened.
It was a big driveway
“My family (wife, two children, and myself) have just bought a new house that has a driveway capable of fitting six cars comfortably,” said the man. The couple has a car each, so there’s always plenty of extra space on the driveway.
It’s convenient for next door
The house next door is split into three apartments. The stairway to the top apartment is just a few feet away from this guy’s driveway, while the parking space for that apartment is right around the other side of the building. In other words, it’s much easier for the neighbor to use this man’s driveway.
They used it before with permission
And that’s where all the drama started. “Our neighbor in the upper apartment mentioned to my wife that the previous owner allowed her to park in the driveway,” explained the man.
Things were different
The previous owner was an elderly lady who didn’t drive, so the driveway was always empty. But this family needed the space. “My wife responded with a casual ‘Oh, we have two kids and need to use all of the space in the driveway for parking and playing,'” said the man.
They didn’t get the message
But the neighbor didn’t pick up on the hint. Or they simply ignored it. “The neighbor proceeded to park in the driveway many times to bring her laundry up to her apartment,” said the man.
He always missed them
It usually happened when the man was out at work or in meetings. His wife was home but didn’t want to say anything; she was worried she’d sound like a bad neighbor and didn’t want any confrontation.
It was about respect
The man started to get really annoyed. There was space on the driveway, but that wasn’t the point. “I feel like it’s a respect thing,” explained the man. “It’s my property.”
He finally said something
Then he caught the neighbor red-handed. He was at home and heard her car pulling up in his driveway. It was time to say something.
He told them to stay off his property
He marched out of the front door. When the neighbor saw him, she acted like she wasn’t doing anything wrong. “Oh, it’s just me doing my laundry again,” she said. But the man didn’t care. He told her to stay off his driveway. Then he went back into the house.
His wife called him a jerk
He felt proud of himself. He’d stood up for what he thought was right. But his wife didn’t see it that way. “My wife was appalled and said I was a jerk,” he said. “She’s worried that the neighbor will tell all the other neighbors about it.”
He wasn’t sorry
That’s not this man’s problem. And he has no regrets. “My driveway camera won’t go off anymore, my dog won’t bark at her using the driveway anymore, and I will no longer have to stew over the irrational anger of my driveway being used without permission,” he said.
He asked the question
But his wife still thinks he acted like a massive jerk. Is she right? He asked the internet for its opinions: “Was I wrong for telling the neighbor to stay off my driveway?”
The internet responded
“Absolutely not,” said this person. “Your property, your driveway. Her problems are not your problems.”
“Just because the previous owner of your house didn’t mind—and remember, you have only the neighbor’s word for that—doesn’t mean that the neighbor gets to continue using it,” said another.
