She had to stay late for work, but when she failed to tell her husband, he showed up at 1am with their 3-year-old daughter

A woman recently asked if she was in the wrong for staying late at work, even though her husband had asked she come home. Here’s what she had to say:

Three years prior, the woman, then 34, had given birth to her daughter. Since then, she’d devoted herself to raising the child at home.

The mother continued, “Now that my daughter is older, I decided to get a part-time afternoon job so my husband (aged 40) could watch over our daughter while I worked.”

Initially, she secured a position at a pastry shop. However, the owner’s unpleasant behavior and the demands for consistent unpaid overtime drove her to leave the job.

Subsequently, she began working at a local burger joint, a role she surprisingly enjoyed.

However, problems in her relationship with her husband arose when she started arriving 15 minutes early and leaving a bit late to get better acquainted with her co-workers.

The warm and welcoming environment made her feel guilty about leaving precisely at the end of her shift while everyone else lingered to chat. Her husband had begrudgingly given his consent for her early arrival but drew the line there.

It Was a Very Busy Shift

The wife recalled, “Yesterday, I was working until midnight. We were really understaffed, and I didn’t even get my break or even drink a cup of water during my whole shift.”

When midnight arrived, her manager requested that she stay another hour, to which she agreed, wanting to be as helpful as possible and get some extra pay.

Her Husband Rang

As soon as the woman entered the crew room after her extended shift, her phone began to ring. It was her husband.

Quickly grabbing her jacket, she returned his call, informing him of her late finish and the demanding shift she’d endured. His response left her bewildered.

Her husband then asked if she knew where he was, increasing her confusion until she spotted him only a minute away from her workplace, standing with their 3-year-old daughter at one in the morning.

The woman added, “My job is two blocks from our home, and I walk one of the most well-lit and busier streets to get there.”

He Was Furious

The husband unleashed an angry tirade at his wife in front of the child, accusing her of neglect for not calling him, expressing his worry, and warning her that their situation needed to change to avoid further problems.

The woman found this slightly hypocritical since he had previously prohibited her from calling him at his office, even though he was self-employed.

She Apologized

In an attempt to soothe the situation, she apologized for not notifying him about her extended shift, explaining that her position at the register had prevented her from stepping away to the crew room.

However, he rejected her apology, and communication between them has been frozen ever since.

Was She Wrong?

The woman questioned whether she was genuinely in the wrong for not informing her husband about her extra working hour, particularly given how busy she had been and her husband’s own rule about not calling during work hours.

Conflicted and frustrated, she asked for advice online about who was in the wrong in this situation; her husband or her?

People Responded

One user commented, “You were an hour late home at midnight, I understand he was worried, but he should have behaved like a normal adult, not yelling like a madman. He was most likely afraid, and fear is powerful, making people act badly.”

Another responded, “This could have been solved with a bare minimum of communication. How long would it take to send a text? My husband would be worried too.”
