A woman recently asked if she was wrong for inviting her son to the gated community where she and her daughter lived, knowing that the two of them didn’t get on. The daughter now won’t speak to her mom, but who’s in the wrong? Here’s what the woman had to say:
They are not close
“I have two children, a 33-year-old daughter and a 40-year-old son,” said the woman. The siblings are not close. In fact, there’s some real animosity between the pair, and they haven’t spoken in years.
It was a family rift
“I’m not getting into it all here,” said the woman. “But a lot of it has to do with my son’s wife.”
She was a widow
A few years ago, the woman’s husband passed away. She didn’t want to live alone in her big house, so she sold it and moved into the same gated community as her daughter. “I like having her and her husband close by, so I know I’m not alone,” explained the woman.
It was a great place to live
The gated community is a beautiful place to live. It has lots of great features, including a swimming pool for residents.
She invited her son
And it’s this pool that started all the problems. “Last weekend, I asked my son to bring his wife and kids to the pool for the day on Saturday,” said the woman.
The daughter got a heads-up
The woman knew this might cause some drama, so she gave her daughter a heads-up. “I called her and said my son and his family would be at the pool,” explained the mom.
She flipped out
That made the daughter mad. “She was upset and said she and her husband intended to use the pool all weekend, and could I please tell my son no,” said the woman.
Mom refused
Her mom said no way. She told her daughter she was being ridiculous and unfair.
Mom ‘ruined’ her weekend
But the daughter didn’t care. She accused her mom of ruining her weekend and claimed she was taking away her safe space by letting her brother into the community.
They paid the same
Then she reminded her mom that she was paying for the pool and now couldn’t use it because her brother would be there. Her mom clapped back by saying she paid the same amount and that the only person stopping her daughter from using the pool was herself.
They had a pool day
The weekend came around, and the woman’s son and his family had a great time at the pool. The sister never showed up and hasn’t spoken to her mom since. She’s also ignoring all her mom’s text messages.
Mom thinks she was right
“I think she is being a complete brat,” said the mother. “This is my home too. I pay just as much to live here and should be able to use the amenities as I please.” Then she asked, “But was I out of line for letting my son and his family use the amenities in my gated community?”
She got her answer
“Yes, you were way out of line,” said this person. “You moved into her community, and now you are bringing around people that make her uncomfortable after she asked you not to. It’s obvious you prefer your son over your daughter.”
“Your daughter lives in a gated community with nice amenities, and YOU decided to move there to be closer to her,” agreed another. “Then YOU choose your son over your daughter, spoiling living in a gated community for your daughter, who was there first. Not cool.”
