A woman’s mother-in-law, who lives in a house that the woman and her husband bought for her, evidently favors her son’s nephew over her son’s children and stepchildren. This behavior has caused the woman to snap, and she is beyond angry.
They bought her mother-in-law a house
The woman, who is 34 years old, has been with her husband for six years. Together, they have a four-year-old child, and the woman also has two other sons, who are 11 and six years old. Recently, they bought a house for her mother-in-law “right down the road” from their own home. She lives by herself and does not have a car.
Her husband’s nephew stays there
Every three weeks or so, the nephew of the woman’s husband, who is 10 years old, stays with her mother-in-law. The interactions, however, are “forced.” Her husband’s nephew is a “spoiled brat who is severely overweight, lies, and bullies.”
Her mother-in-law prefers the nephew
Despite the woman’s children interacting and doing far more for her mother-in-law than her husband’s nephew does, his nephew still has his own room at her house. The woman’s children “aren’t even allowed to sit on his bed whenever he’s not there.” A comment he made to the woman’s child about getting out of “his room” annoyed her.
It was their purchase
“My husband and I bought that house for her,” she said. “How is he going to tell my kid anything about a house that I bought? My mother-in-law doesn’t do anything to stop it and practically encourages the behavior by not letting my kids in the spare room, calling it my nephew’s room. The kids notice the favoritism too.”
Her husband didn’t want to hear about it
The woman has mentioned this to her husband more than once, and he has since told her that he doesn’t want to hear about it anymore. She knows that it “isn’t her place” to speak with her mother-in-law about this. The nephew stayed with her over spring break, and, despite being on a fixed income, she prepared meals that were out of her budget.
Her mother-in-law made a request
Eventually, the woman’s mother-in-law called her husband, telling him that she had no money and was out of groceries. Her husband gave his mother some money, despite being part of a family of five that is also on a fixed income with a small budget. This donation left the family short.
The woman snapped
Her husband was asked to help, despite the fact that, while hosting the nephew, her mother-in-law was making five-course meals for him each day. The woman was furious and decided that she would refuse to do anything for her mother-in-law in the future.
Her relationship is being affected
The woman used to mow the grass, pick up groceries, and take her mother-in-law to doctor’s appointments, but this has since stopped. She has told her husband that she’ll no longer be helping, and he is unable to help like that due to work. As such, it has created a problem that is impacting their relationship, but the woman wants to stand her ground.
