A man recently wondered if he did something wrong by turning off the internet at home to prevent his overworked, pregnant wife from working. Here’s what he had to say:
The couple are expecting twins
The man, aged 35, has been married to his wife, Jen, who is 30 years old, for three years. They were in a relationship for six years before tying the knot. Currently, Jen is eight months pregnant with twins.
They both have well paid jobs
“She’s my best friend, and I absolutely adore her, but she is a huge workaholic/perfectionist,” he said. Both of them have jobs that pay them very well, though his wife’s job is far more stressful and demanding of time.
She works a lot
Though Jen is both “brilliant and amazing” at her job, she often works around the clock from home and in the office. More often than not, Jen works for around 60 hours per week.
She’s on maternity leave
The man, however, noted that this was not a problem in the past for him or his wife. Recently, though, Jen was told to take a step back from her work to essentially begin her maternity leave slightly earlier than she had planned.
She still works from home
This was because the stress she was facing from her job was causing her health issues, though both babies were completely fine. “However, being the workaholic that she is, she has still been working from her laptop for six to eight hours every day,” he said.
She’s too involved with it
“Which, fine, I understand that she had a couple of cases that she needed to finish. But most days, she was so focused on work that she was forgetting to eat meals and falling asleep at her desk.”
Asleep at the computer
The man recently returned from work and, upon getting home, realized that his wife had done that very thing again. He woke Jen up and told her she needed to go to bed and rest there.
She says it’s fine
She, however, insisted that there was nothing wrong with her. She was adamant that she was okay and just finalizing some things for a coworker, as there had been an emergency with one of her clients.
He insisted on a break
The man, in response, asked that she take a nap or have something to eat first, mainly wanting Jen to take a break before doing anything else. She said that she would when she had completed what she set out to do and that it would take her no longer than an hour.
He did something drastic
Though the man was quite annoyed, he did not argue with his wife and she said that it would be no longer than an hour. Two hours later, Jen was still working at her computer. As such, the man became frustrated and unplugged his WiFi connection, putting the cable out of sight!
She got upset
When Jen realized what had happened, she began to shout at the man, calling him a jerk for his actions and saying that he was treating her like a child.
They got into a fight
She also accused the man of being condescending, controlling, and “borderline abusive.” In response, the man told Jen she was being stupid and that she should just let the coworker who asked her for help handle it alone.
He said it wasn’t a big deal
He noted that he would plug the WiFi back in when he woke up in the morning, which he did, but that she could use her own mobile phone hotspot or figure out how to activate the router herself.
He apologized but she’s angry
Jen went on to sleep in the guest room that night. The next day, the man went to apologize to Jen for calling her stupid, though not for cutting off the internet. Jen is still angry and won’t even speak to him.
The man asked if he was wrong
“To a certain extent, I get your concern, especially if her doctor said to limit stress,” said one commenter.
“Does she need a better work/life balance? Probably. But the way you deal with that concern is NOT by taking away your wife’s autonomy. That’s just unacceptable in a relationship.”
