A mother recently had her daughter removed from her class because her teacher wouldn’t help her open a snack bag. The mom was furious and felt that the teacher wasn’t doing her job. Here’s what she had to say.
Her daughter has severe food allergies
The woman’s five-year-old daughter is enrolled in a school that permits children to bring their own snacks. However, her daughter faces a significant challenge as she has a severe food allergy that has resulted in previous hospitalizations.
Mom found some safe snacks
Thankfully, the woman had found a snack option that was deemed safe for her daughter’s severe food allergy. For several months, she diligently provided this snack for her child to take to school. However, one day, when her daughter returned home, the mother was taken aback to discover that the snack remained untouched and still in her daughter’s bag.
She couldn’t open it herself
“She told me it was too tough for her to open. I asked her about previous weeks, and she told me that her teacher used to help her but doesn’t anymore,” the woman said.
The teacher wouldn’t help
The woman told her daughter to ask the teacher to help her the next day, but the snack was still unopened when the little girl returned from school. The teacher told her daughter she needed to learn to open the snacks herself.
Mom asked the teacher
The woman was annoyed but sent the teacher a polite email explaining that the snack was quite tough to open and that it would be helpful if she could help her daughter open it. If she didn’t, the girl would have an 8-hour school day with only her lunchtime to eat.
She was a little angry
“I was nice about it – but you better believe it did tick me off a bit that she would rather let a kid go without a snack while all the other kids ate one than help a 5-year-old open a snack,” the woman said.
Nothing had changed
The next day her daughter still came home with an unopened snack. The mom then called the teacher to ask what was going on.
The teacher had a reason
The teacher said that their goal for the last few months of kindergarten is to promote independence and that she couldn’t do that if she had to hold the kid’s hand at every turn.
She put it on the mom
She said, “It might help if you send a “normal” snack instead of such a difficult-to-open one.” The woman was astounded because the teacher knew about the daughter’s food intolerances.
Mom asked to remove the daughter from her class
“At this point, I politely thanked her and called her principal, asking him to move my daughter to a different classroom,” she said. The woman thought it was inappropriate to emphasize that her daughter’s snacks weren’t “normal” enough, given that she cannot live a normal life.
She wants her daughter to fit in
“I wish I could give her some Cheetos or a pack of cookies like the other kids get, but I can’t and just wanted my daughter to have something a little bit more fun when all the other kids were eating those things,” she explained.
The school got involved
The woman’s daughter moved classrooms, but then the teacher involved sent the mom a message about how she had really made things ‘difficult’ over a snack. Turns out, the school opened an investigation and monitors how the teacher interacts with the kids.
She wondered if she should have found another way
Two of the other moms commented in the mom’s group chat that the way the teacher was being treated was “completely unfair” and that a child’s food issues shouldn’t be their teacher’s issue to deal with.
She turned to Reddit and asked
One user said, “In second grade, my mom kept sending me those wax-covered mini cheeses. A teacher noticed I wasn’t eating them (I had any idea how to remove the wax). She sat down on the ground next to me and showed me step by step.”
The teacher sounds entitled
Another said, “I had a pretty severe milk allergy when I was little. Imagine if the teacher just didn’t care and let me eat cakes or whatever. Anyways this teacher sounds either lazy or entitled. I can’t believe some parents are taking her side.”
