They met at school
“My son has a friend, who I’ll call John,” shared the woman. They met in 5th grade and have been best buddies ever since.
His parents were protective
John has lived a bit of a sheltered life, mainly due to his overprotective parents. “The first time he came into our home was the first time he was allowed to be out with friends,” explained the mom.
She was happy he came over
The mom was happy to meet John and have him over to the house. “He’s my son’s closest friend,” she said.
John was a bit awkward
But she soon realized that John wasn’t like most kids. He seemed to lack some basic social skills. “I don’t know if he is one of those brutally honest types or doesn’t understand there’s a time and place for things,” she said.
He had zero boundaries
For example, the first time they met, John asked the mom some very personal questions about her daughter. “My son must’ve told him; not sure why,” she said. “John was very open with what he thought, even if it was just plain rude.”
It happened again
And this wasn’t a one-off. The mom met John twice more, and he was the same both times. The mom and the rest of the family couldn’t deal with this kid anymore.
He defended him
Her son stuck up for John, explaining that his friend was just raised differently. The mom got it. Still, she told him never to bring John to the house again.
They were still friends
“We were fed up by the third time,” the mom explained. “My son was still allowed to hang out with John, but not bring him over.”
His birthday arrived
Now the son is getting ready to celebrate his 17th birthday. The family is planning a little get-together at their home.
He invited John
But the son wants John at the party, and he won’t let the issue drop. “He’s asked multiple times,” she said, but she just doesn’t want him there.
She wants to give him a chance
“I’d be willing to change my mind if John apologizes to the people he hurt with his questions and ‘honesty.'” But she knew that wasn’t going to happen. The son has stopped talking about it, but he’s still upset with his mom.
She wanted to know
She feels bad and wonders if John is neurodivergent, which might explain his socially awkward behavior. So she wants to know, “Am I the jerk? Should I put up with John for just one day for my son?”

“Not the jerk,” replied one person. “You said he can still spend time with John, but you don’t want him in your house because he was rude and made your daughter uncomfortable. That’s fair. It’s your house, and you get a say on who comes in.”
“Not the jerk,” agreed another. “I understand your frustration with this kid. And frankly, you do have the right to say, ‘sorry, but them’s the breaks in my house. Either respect us or stay out.'”
