A man recently had an argument with his coworkers and his in-laws after he was coerced into having a dry wedding which caused most of the guests to leave early. Here is what he had to say.
He’s been on honeymoon
Earlier this year, the man tied the knot and embarked on a three-week honeymoon in Europe with his new spouse. After returning, he resumed his job and had his first week back at work.
His in-laws paid for the wedding
Thanks to the generous support of his wife’s family, they were able to cover all the expenses of the wedding, leaving the money his parents had saved for the occasion to be used as a down payment on a house.
His wife’s family is religious
The only catch for the man was that his wife’s family comes from a religion that frowns on drinking alcohol. They said they would only pay for the ceremony if it were a dry wedding and would not travel to New York if there would be alcohol there.
His wife isn’t religious
The man met his wife at college, and back then, she was coming away from the religion that her family followed. She has now completely stopped following it. Her parents have not disowned her for turning her back on their religion, which he respects about them.
The couple pretended to be religious
The man and his wife had to “play the part” whenever her family visited. This included not drinking, not saying curse words, attending church on a Sunday, and the man would have to sleep on the couch if her family slept at their house.
He didn’t plan on drinking much at his wedding
The man is not a particular drinker anyway and was not planning on getting wasted at his wedding, so he didn’t mind not having any alcohol there. But his parents managed to convince his wife’s parents to allow champagne at the ceremony, which they paid for themself.
He didn’t warn people that it would be a dry wedding
Though it was not something they felt they needed to highlight on the invitations, he discovered that having an alcohol-free wedding in New York required notification.
Guests started to leave early
Their reception was at the same place where they held their ceremony. As the man and his bride were about to enter the venue, he saw one of his coworkers and her husband heading towards the exit.
He asked where they were going
The man’s coworker was at something of a loss for words, but her husband told them that they were leaving as the ceremony was in “bad taste,” in no small part due to it being a dry wedding. The man and his bride were not particularly bothered that only two people were leaving, but the woman was worried that it might be a sign of things to come.
She was right
Before the cake was cut, about half of the wedding had already left, and those who had stayed complained about the situation.
His father-in-law had some harsh words
The man’s father-in-law commented on how disrespectful it was that everybody was leaving and that it was a poor reflection on the man.
He defended himself
He snapped and told his father-in-law that his family and friends were leaving due to the “cult” aspects to which the wedding had to adhere. He then said that he and his wife would no longer conform and would be drinking and speaking as they usually would in the future, regardless of who was around.
He had a go at his coworker
When the man returned to work, he told his coworker that her husband had been extremely rude and that he did not want to be her friend outside of the office. However, another coworker took her side and said that he didn’t say it would be a dry wedding because nobody would have shown up if he had.
Did he do the right thing?
Unsure whether he was wrong not to warn people that the wedding would be dry and doubting whether he should have shouted at his in-laws, he asked Reddit for advice.
People responded
Someone said, “They offered to pay, and you accepted the money on the basis that you agreed to their terms. Getting annoyed with them because your guests left because of a decision you made is ridiculous.”
