A man recently asked the Reddit community whether or not he overreacted when he found out his son’s grandma had shouted at his wife when picking up her grandchild. He had the grandma banned from school premises, but did he go too far?
They parent together
“I co-parent a 12-year-old boy with my ex “Clara.” We’re okay with each and are on the same page with our son Ben. I’m currently remarried to “Jessica,” and we have two boys in elementary school,” the man said.
There was a mistake
One day, a mix-up occurred between the man and Clara about picking Ben up from school. Clara’s mother, Ben’s grandma, drove to pick him up only to find out she didn’t need to because Jessica, the man’s new wife, was already there.
The mom couldn’t make it
Earlier in the day, Clara had asked the dad if he could pick up Ben from school as her car was at the repair shop. He couldn’t, but he assured Clara that Jessica would do it since she was already picking up their other sons from school.
The wife got yelled at
“Jessica called me and said she got yelled at by Clara’s mother, who also showed up to pick up Ben. Clara asked Grandma to pick him up, but there was some confusion or misunderstanding about Jessica picking Ben up,” the man said.
Grandma had driven far
Turns out, the grandmother had driven 30 miles to pick up Ben, only to find Jessica waiting at the school entrance.
She was angry
Upset about the situation, the grandmother took her frustration out on Jessica, swearing at her and calling her “inconsiderate” and “rude” for not telling her that she didn’t have to drive so far.
The wife didn’t know
“My wife told her she had no idea what she was talking about. She just did what I asked and was being supportive of Clara. She said she was free to take Ben. Grandma didn’t and left.”
The man was angry
When the man heard about the incident, he was furious and called Clara. She said her mother hadn’t known she didn’t need to pick up Ben after all, which was why she was so angry.
He talked to the school
The man told Clara that “she and her mom owe my wife an apology.” Clara apologized for herself and her mother, but the man felt it wasn’t enough. The next day, he spoke to the school’s vice principal and requested that the grandmother be banned from the school premises.
Grandma is banned
The vice principal agreed and sent a letter stating that the grandmother wasn’t allowed on school premises or to sign Ben out of school until the end of the month, at which point the situation would be reevaluated.
They are unhappy
Clara and the grandmother were upset about this decision, especially as the grandma always came to watch the son’s lacrosse games at school.
He’s not budging
The man refuses to back down on his decision unless the grandma apologizes. If she doesn’t, she would have to wait until the following year to be able to pick up Ben from school again.
The man asked for advice
One user responded, “NTA. Grandma was way out of line to speak to your wife like that, especially in front of a child.”
Another user commented, “NTA. While it’s understandable Grandma was upset, her behavior was unacceptable, so I think it’s reasonable for her to be temporarily banned. She does need to apologize, big time.”
