A man shared how he blocked off the alley behind his house so the neighbors couldn’t use it. Now everyone, including his family, is calling him a massive jerk. Let’s see what he has to say.
He became a homeowner
“Last year, I bought a house in my area,” shared the man. It’s a beautiful old red brick building. It’s his dream house.
He got more than he expected
During the buying process, the man discovered that he wasn’t just buying the house. He would also own the alleyway running behind it.
He double-checked
The man asked the realtor if this was really true. They said yes, he owned the house and the alleyway, as it’s all part of the same property.
It was the law
It sounded like one of those deals that’s too good to be true. So he checked it out for himself. “I went to the courthouse to double-check, and confirmed it.”
He met the neighbors
A few days after moving in, he met his new neighbors. To break the ice, he joked about charging them rent to use his alley.
They had no sense of humor
But they didn’t find it funny. “They flipped out,” explained the man. But he wasn’t looking to start a war with his new neighbors, so he let it go.
They made demands
Winter came around. And that’s when all the trouble started. The neighbors demanded that the man plow the alleyway whenever it snowed. Otherwise, one of them could slip. And if that happened, they promised to sue.
He hired a friend
He knew the neighbors weren’t messing around, and he didn’t need a legal case on his hands. “I paid a friend $25.00 a month to plow the alley every time it snows to keep them happy.”
He learned the law
At the same time, he went to the courthouse to do some more research. He wanted to know what his rights to the alley included.
It was his property
He discovered he could do whatever he wanted with it. That meant having the power to decide who could (and couldn’t) use it.
He built a fence
So he got his revenge on the neighbors. “I paid some local contractors and had them build a gate at the entrance of the alley that I keep locked.”
It was all legal
Then he put up some no-trespassing signs. It’s all 100% legal.
They were mad
The neighbors were not happy. In fact, they were furious with the man for blocking off the alley. “Now the neighbors are just livid,” he said.
His family didn’t support him
The alley is all his now. But this victory came at a high price. All the neighbors think he’s a jerk. Even his own family says he’s acting petty as hell.
He didn’t care
The man couldn’t give a damn about what his neighbors think. But he wants to have his family back on his side. So he shared the story to see what other people thought. He asked, “Am I a jerk for blocking off the alley so neighbors couldn’t use it?”
The internet answered
“Not the jerk,” said one person. “Someone threatened to sue you over a perceived potential hazard, and you blocked access to the hazard. That’s a reasonable response. Problem solved. Enjoy your alley.”
“Someone threatens to sue you? Make sure they can’t, which you did,” posed another supporter. “The neighbors started all this. You just did what you had to do. Your family should understand this.”
