A woman recently asked for guidance concerning a situation aboard a first-class flight. She had never flown first class before and was excited to do so. So, when the flight attendant asked her to take a downgrade so that a child could sit with his parents, she refused to budge. Was she right to stand her ground? Here’s what she had to say:
The Woman Was Taking The Trip Of A Lifetime
“I (23F) have been planning a trip to San Francisco for around a year at this point and I had booked my tickets a year in advance. Around about a month or two before the trip, the airline called me saying they’d like to upgrade me to first class due to my points and being a member.”
She Made The Most Of The Upgrade
The woman was thrilled to be traveling in style. Before boarding the plane, she took advantage of the facilities in the lounge. She couldn’t believe how comfortable flying could be. She was looking forward to spending the next thirteen hours in the lap of luxury. But there was a problem.
The Flight Attendant Had Bad News
“About an hour into the flight, a flight attendant comes up to me and asks if I’d be willing to swap seats with a 10-year-old boy who was in economy,” the woman explained.
The Boy And His Parents Were Separated
Like the woman, the boy’s parents were in first class, and they were concerned about being separated from the kid during their long flight. They too had received a complimentary upgrade without realizing that their son would be stuck in economy. Now, they were demanding that the woman move so that he could join them.
The Flight Attendant Tried To Resolve Things
The woman listened as the flight attendant explained her options. She could get a free upgrade on another flight or even a full refund if she swapped seats with the boy. But the woman was unconvinced.
She Asked To Stay In Her Seat
The woman had earned her upgrade by being a frequent flyer. She wasn’t about to throw that bonus away. She said that she might have moved if the parents had bought first-class tickets, but they had been upgraded too. They were all in the same boat, and she didn’t see why she should be the one getting pushed overboard.
The Woman Avoided The Parents
Luckily for the woman, the boy’s parents were not sitting close to her. However, although she avoided any direct complaints from them, her decision did trigger some backlash from her fellow passengers.
An Old Woman Intervened
One of the woman’s fellow passengers was an old woman. The old woman thought that the woman was being selfish and unreasonable. Because she had refused to move, a young child would be separated from his parents for thirteen hours. How could she be so thoughtless?
The Woman Was Worried That The Child Might Be Scared
She understood why the old woman was mad at her. The flight was long, and the child might struggle without his parents around. But she soon realized that the kid was making frequent visits to his parents’ seats, so she guessed he couldn’t be too lonely.
Was She In The Wrong?
Although the flight went smoothly in the end, she couldn’t get it out of her head that she’d done something wrong. Perhaps it had been selfish to split the family up. But, then again, she had earned the right to fly first class.

Some pointed out that the parents could have moved to economy if they wanted to be with their son. “I’m sure two people in economy would’ve been glad to swap with the parents!” said one user, while another added, “Parents should prioritize their kids, not expect someone else to prioritize their kids”.
