The 2023 Oscar nominations are here and although some predictions came true, others have been a complete miss.

Several media outlets, including Variety, predicted a 7th nomination for the two-time Oscar winner for his role in A Man Called Otto. Unfortunately, his name was not among the five announced this year.

It was almost guaranteed that Brendan Fraser would receive a nomination for his performance in The Whale, but the film only received three nominations in total. Hong Chau was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley were nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling. No nominations for Best Picture or for Best Director – Darren Aronofsky.

Although well deserved, a slightly surprising nomination for Aftersun’s Paul Mescal. We’re glad to see him rewarded for his work, especially as director Charlotte Wells missed out on a nomination.

Viola Davis delivered a heart-wrenching performance as Nanisca in Woman King, and a nomination for Best Actress was highly expected. The movie garnered critical acclaim and even box office success, but unfortunately, this was not enough to garner her a nomination at this year’s Academy Awards.

No Female Director Nominations

It was widely anticipated that either Sarah Polley or Charlotte Wells would receive a Best Director nomination, but alas, not a single female director was nominated this year.

Only five women can be nominated in the Best Actress category, and there have been an extraordinary number of great performances this year, including Clay Foy’s, so we were a bit disappointed to see her miss out on a nomination.

Perhaps Hugh Jackman’s campaign for the Academy members not to nominate “Good Afternoon” in the Best Song category worked, but we were surprised nonetheless.

Tom Cruise had quite a year with Top Gun: Maverick turning out to be his biggest box office success yet. The film was nominated in six categories in total, including a Best Picture nomination for which Cruise is listed as a producer. No Best Actor nomination, however.

Brian Tyree Henry delivers a riveting performance in the Apple+ produced drama; however, his nomination still came as a surprise.

It was no surprise to see Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis nominated at this year’s Oscars; however, a surprise nomination for Stephanie Hsu means the film could take home the gong for all four actor awards.

Actors such as Jane Fonda, Geena Davis, and Gwyneth Paltrow publicly supported the film, and hey, see what happens when women support women?
