Her Noisy Neighbors Were Running an Illegal Airbnb so She Reported Them and Now They’re Forced To Move

A guy tells a story of how he and his girlfriend recently discovered that their neighbors were illegally subletting their apartment to Airbnb and why the couple chose to report them.

The guy and his girlfriend live in a rented apartment in a small complex, which is usually a quiet place to live. They initially struggled to find a place to live, going through the pain of endless waitlists and a complete lack of availability in their city.

Back in September, they found a vacant apartment next door to them was being moved into by a new tenant, filling it with new decor and furniture.

One weekend not long after moving in, they began to hear what sounded like a party, loud music that could be heard through the walls, and consistent banging of the front door that shook the walls of their apartment.

They thought perhaps their new tenant was having a housewarming party so they let this one slide, even though the disruption continued past midnight.

Over the next few weeks, they noticed little changes to their once peaceful life. There was near-constant noise, people were constantly coming and going, slamming doors, and there were never any parking spaces left.

They found that the people coming from the apartment were never the same. So it all seemed very suspicious!
The guy’s girlfriend works nights, so with all this noise and disruption, she was struggling to sleep. This all took a toll on her, so she quickly had enough.

One morning, she heard the door slamming at around 10:30, so went out to check who the perpetrator was. As it turned out, the “tenants” were carrying suitcases to their car, and soon after, cleaners arrived to do up the room. Upon witnessing this, the narrator’s girlfriend thought to look up the apartment on Airbnb only to find it listed as a property!

Same floor plan, walls, same everything!

To their anger, they found four other listings in the same building. It was clear that someone was profiting from rental properties in the apartment complex.

So, not only were they creating a huge noise problem, they were taking properties from potential renters, who, like them, are probably struggling to find anywhere to live!

The couple, tired of all the noise, knew that their complex didn’t allow subletting or short-term rentals. The girlfriend called the leasing office to notify them of their problem and asked if this was legal. They told them very clearly that this was “absolutely not allowed.” That afternoon they conducted an inspection and gave the tenant a cease and desist letter!

They were glad to know the tenant now has to pay for four leases, around $6000 a month, and can’t make any more money from Airbnb.

Last week, they watched as movers cleaned out the flat, and peace was restored!

What do you think about what the couple did? Did they take it too far?
