Certain industries, habits, and concepts are gradually fading away due to generational shifts. An internet survey recently asked, “What’s something millennials are killing that deserves to go away? Here are the 17 best responses.
Buying Useless Junk
“Maybe it’s because I live in a city with insane rents, but most people my age don’t have much useless junk as our parents did. No one wants wedding china, napkin rings, or random collectibles (my Gran used to have 100 hand bells, for example). We don’t have room!”
“My wife got her grandmother’s China, and we never use it. It’s just this big box of fragile stuff we have that we can’t get rid of because you know it was her grandma’s.”
Using Cable TV
“The cable companies will probably switch to streaming service providers once all the networks make their own streaming services. Then we’ll be back to stage one, paying the cable TV cost to get all the streaming services relatively cheaper than buying them individually.”
“Why would I pay ~$100 for channels I don’t need? Now I pay for Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go… wait.”
Live To Work Mentality
“The concept of employer loyalty doesn’t exist anymore. I’ve seen too many people spend 60+ hours a week running themselves ragged trying to show that they’re a good employee only to have the company treat them worse than the rest of the other employees.”
“Agree. I secretly love this generation because we don’t care about work.”
The Diamond Jewelry Industry
“I told them I thought diamonds were stupid, and they looked at me like I was being an antisocial nonconformist. You have to get a diamond, they said. But wouldn’t a down payment on a home be more useful? I asked.”
“It’s just shiny rocks. They aren’t even rare.”
Working Overtime Without Pay
“I know a million people have said this before. No one thinks you’re cool for not taking time for yourself. Just last week, a coworker bragged, “I haven’t had a vacation in three years. Guess I’m just a hard worker.””
“Working overtime generally means your employer is not staffed as it should.”
Drinking and Driving
“And drinking at home too! It’s comfy, the alcohol is cheaper, I can wear my pajamas and go straight to bed, etc.”
“Self-driving cars should also help.”
Weddings
“It is such a racket. Put “wedding” before anything, and the price quadruples.”
“That’s why you pretend it’s for a “family reunion” and get the cheap deal on the cake and everything. But you can’t throw a fit when the eggshell frosting isn’t eggshelly enough for you. The high prices are a surcharge for the expected fits that will happen if it’s for a wedding.”
Going to Hooters
“The food is terrible, and the girls aren’t nearly scantily clad enough for the generation that grew up with the internet.”
“It feels so 1980s. I don’t foresee it lasting long once boomers start dying off.”
Going to Applebee’s
“I’m a millennial, and I don’t hate Applebee’s. I know what I’m getting into. I like the new stuffed pasta thing they have. It’s like $12, so for $20, I get a decent enough meal, a large beer, and leave a decent tip.”
“Applebee’s was such an integral part of my high school experience it kind of sucks to know how poorly it’s currently perceived.”
Believe in Superstitions
“Seems like millennials are more skeptical in general while many of our grandparents still talk about covering all the mirrors in the house during a thunderstorm because they attract lightning bolts.”
“I dunno. I’ve met many ‘spiritual’ people who believe in the power of crystals and essential oils. That’s a new blend of superstitions.”
Drive a Harley Davidson
“Overpriced, outdated, and lives off of selling nostalgia. If you want a 1970s bike that costs 2020s money and comes with a “lifestyle” to cosplay, get a Harley.”
“Harley’s big plan to capture/create the new generation of riders? A $29,799 electric motorcycle. It’s truly unbelievable. Harley helmets are just HJC with stickers and an additional $100-200 price increase. They will be dead if they don’t figure their business out.”
Throw Away Culture
“Millenials are pushing for bamboo straws and spaces where people can share tools and knowledge so products are repaired instead of discarded. They are killing the old school disposable world theory, which needed to die back in the 80s.”
“Disposable is very much a modern phenomenon. My parents grew up with tool shares and repair culture.”
Buying Low-Quality Pet Food Brands
“I always check the reviews for dog food brands before I buy them because there are too many that were careless and ended up killing many animals. My dog is my baby, and it’s my job to ensure he doesn’t get any preventable illnesses.”
“My dog died from an enlarged heart thanks to grain-free foods. She was five years old, and I still feel bad.”
Be OK With Taxpayers Footing the Bill for New Sports Stadiums
“Nah, this one will be around for a long time.”
“It’s certainly going that way in Florida after the Miami fiasco, but I don’t think this trend is going anywhere.”
Eating American Cheese
“I’m from Wisconsin, and that stuff is disgusting.”
“It’s not even cheese…”
Be Hyped About For-Profit Colleges
“I wish just one person had told a 17-year-old me that it was okay to go to technical school instead of a 4-year university. But nobody did. I don’t know about you, but my parents and school counselor and teachers talked about tech schools like it was what stupid people did.”
“If someone wants a job or career that doesn’t require a degree, that person shouldn’t go to college.”
Use Disposable Napkins
“The only napkins ever in my house are those from fast food places. I use them up first, then return to the paper towels.”
“My boomer parents rarely used disposable napkins. We’d just buy some old T-shirts from Goodwill. Disposables are nice when eating dinner together, which people probably don’t even do anymore.”
