A movie’s title can either draw in or turn away potential viewers. In this post, we’re highlighting 18 movies that should have gone with a different title, featuring misleading, unmemorable, or downright confusing titles that didn’t accurately represent the film’s content.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
“Edge of Tomorrow” could have kept its original and more fitting title “All You Need Is Kill,” from the Japanese novel it’s based on. The eventual choice “Live Die Repeat,” used heavily in the promotional materials, also captured the movie’s concept more accurately.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
The 22nd Bond film’s title, “Quantum of Solace,” left fans scratching their heads. While it’s drawn from a lesser-known Ian Fleming story, something a bit more Bond-esque might have landed better with audiences.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Despite being a stellar film, “The Shawshank Redemption” initially struggled at the box office, partly due to its long and hard-to-remember title. A shorter, more impactful title might have drawn in larger crowds initially.
John Carter (2012)
Originally titled “John Carter of Mars,” the final truncated title “John Carter” lacked the intrigue and adventure implied by the original. The more descriptive title might have helped attract sci-fi fans and clarify the film’s genre.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
“Cloud Atlas” is an ambitious film that tackles various narrative strands across different periods. However, its title does little to convey the complexity and richness of its plot, and a more descriptive title might have better represented its narrative scope.
The Constant Gardener (2005)
“The Constant Gardener,” although a faithful adaptation of John le Carré’s novel, could have benefitted from a title that better reflected its thrilling political and social themes rather than focusing on the protagonist’s hobby.
Drive (2011)
“Drive” is a brilliant film, but its somewhat generic title doesn’t quite do justice to its unique blend of action-packed sequences and art house aesthetics. A more distinctive title might have set it apart.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)
While the film is based on a novel of the same name, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” feels like a mouthful. A shorter title might have been easier for audiences to remember and share.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Although it accurately describes the plot, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is one of the longest film titles out there. A more concise title might have been more audience-friendly.
Octopussy (1983)
One of the more unusually titled James Bond films, “Octopussy,” might have gone with a less eyebrow-raising title, despite it being the name of a key character.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
“Vanilla Sky” is an intriguing mind-bending film, but its title doesn’t hint at its thrilling and surreal nature. A title reflecting its dreamlike narrative could have piqued more interest.
The Englishman Who Went up a Hill But Came down a Mountain (1995)
While charmingly quirky, “The Englishman Who Went up a Hill But Came down a Mountain” is a cumbersome title that doesn’t easily roll off the tongue. A shorter, snappier title might have made it more approachable.
Gigli (2003)
“Gigli” (pronounced “jeely”) is notorious for its box office failure, and its confusing title didn’t help. A title that provided some hint about the plot or the characters might have been more appealing.
Chasing Amy (1997)
“Chasing Amy” is a complex exploration of love and friendship, but its title only hints at a small part of the narrative. A more encompassing title might have better encapsulated its multifaceted themes.
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
“The Squid and the Whale” is a poignant exploration of a family going through a divorce, but its title, referencing a museum exhibit, doesn’t provide much insight into its familial themes. A title highlighting its core narrative could have been more effective.
The Hangover Part III (2013)
“The Hangover Part III” suggests another wild night the characters can’t remember. However, the film shifts from this formula, focusing more on a rescue mission. A different title reflecting this change in premise might have set more accurate expectations.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
“Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever” is a title as confusing as the film’s plot. With the title failing to provide any significant intrigue or insight into the film, a more simple and catchy title could have been beneficial.
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
While the title “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” is drawn directly from a plot point in the movie, its length and specificity make it a mouthful and tricky to remember. A simpler title might have made it more accessible.
